Outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will give up all government facilities, including security, and move out of his official residence in 15 days to live like a commoner, AAP said on Wednesday, a day after he tendered his resignation. The first thing Kejriwal talked about after submitting his resignation was his decision to leave the official residence of the Delhi chief minister, senior party leader and AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said at a press conference here.
While Singh had said that Kejriwal would vacate the 6, Flagstaff Road bungalow in a week, AAP later clarified that the outgoing chief minister and his family would do so in 15 days.

A search is on for suitable accommodation for Arvind Kejriwal and his family, Singh had said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said in a post on its official X handle, "Setting an example of honesty and sacrifice Arvind Kejriwal will leave the CM residence and also give up the government security."

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Wednesday upped the ante against her own party as she sharpened her attack on Delhi minister Atishi, who outgoing CM Arvind Kejriwal chose as his successor on Tuesday.

Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will move out of his official residence within one week, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said on Wednesday.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday congratulated Atishi (43) on being designated Delhi's chief minister, calling her "combative" and ''determined''. The former UP chief minister said on hand she has to continue public service and on the other face BJP's "negative politics".
Earlier in the day, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) unanimously agreed on Atishi's name as the next chief minister of Delhi. AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal had proposed her name.

"Best wishes to Atishi ji for fulfilling the responsibility she has been given as the new Chief Minister of Delhi! On one hand she has to continue her work of public service, and on the other hand she has to face the negative politics of the BJP. As a combative and determined young chief minister, may she be successful in every role of hers!" Yadav posted in Hindi on X.

In a surprise decision after he was released on bail from Tihar Jail, Kejriwal on Sunday announced that he would resign as chief minister and would only return if people gave him a "certificate of honesty" in the next Delhi Assembly polls.

Delhi is set to get its third woman chief minister, after Congress' Sheila Dikshit and BJP's Sushma Swaraj, as AAP leader Atishi has been chosen to succeed Arvind Kejriwal. Dikshit was Delhi's longest-serving chief minister, who held the office for 15 years from 1998 to 2013, while Swaraj's tenure lasted 52 days in 1998.
Atishi (43) will be Delhi's youngest chief minister and is also set to become the second current woman chief minister in the country after West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee.

Dikshit was 60 years old when she became the chief minister of Delhi, while Swaraj held the post at the age of 46.

Atishi currently holds the most number of portfolios in the Delhi Cabinet, serving as the Minister for Finance, Water, Education, Public Works, Power, Revenue, Planning, Services, Law, Vigilance, and other key departments.

The AAP leader has played a crucial role in maintaining the party's stability, particularly during the imprisonment of Kejriwal and other senior leaders, when she managed the party's operations along with other leaders.

Kejriwal proposed Atishi as his successor during a meeting of AAP legislators, who unanimously supported it. The AAP supremo met Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Tuesday evening and tendered his resignation, making way for Atishi's appointment.

Arvind Kerjiwal, who resigned as Delhi chief minister on Tuesday, is likely to focus on galvanising the AAP cadre and rebuilding trust among the people before the assembly polls, a senior functionary said. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) cadre has "weakened" due to Kejriwal's prolonged arrest on corruption charges, the functionary added. Kejriwal, who is also the AAP convener, is going to hold a massive poll campaigning in Haryana, where the election is scheduled on October 5.He may also hold road shows in places where the party hopes to do well in Jammu and Kashmir where the elections are happening in three phases till October 1, the functionary said. According to a senior party leader, massive door-to-door campaigning a ward wise has been planned for Kejriwal in the national capital.

BJP leader Prem Ranjan Patel sharply criticized former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's resignation on Tuesday, claiming it would not benefit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Patel argued that Kejriwal’s departure from the top post was an attempt to garner cheap popularity and would not change the party’s fate in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

In a statement to IANS, Patel accused Kejriwal of undermining democracy and seeking to exploit his recent bail for personal gain. “Kejriwal’s resignation will bring no benefit to AAP,” Patel asserted. “He has been trying to create a historic situation while in jail and now seeks to use his resignation for cheap popularity.”

Patel also pointed out the restrictions placed on Kejriwal by the court, which include prohibitions against performing official duties, attending office, and commenting on corruption-related matters. He described Kejriwal as a corrupt individual who had previously claimed to be free of corruption.

“He is barred from performing any official duties as Chief Minister under these conditions,” Patel said. “His efforts will be in vain as the public has already rejected him. During the Lok Sabha elections, he was briefly out of jail for 15 days, claiming he needed to campaign for his party. The public rejected him by affirming his corruption and defeating him in all seven constituencies.”

Patel predicted that AAP would face certain defeat in the upcoming Assembly elections and emphasized that Kejriwal’s resignation would not alter this outcome. “The people of Delhi will ensure he faces consequences in the Assembly elections,” he added.

Atishi, the MLA from Kalkaji and the newly chosen candidate to replace Kejriwal, has been a prominent figure in Delhi’s government. Holding crucial portfolios in Education and the Public Works Department, Atishi has been actively involved in reforming Delhi's education system. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari has raised concerns over the appointment of Atishi as the next Chief Minister of Delhi, questioning her background and affiliations. Tiwari, in a statement on social media, highlighted his reservations about Atishi’s suitability for the role.

“They have appointed Atishi as the CM. We welcome her, but her background is questionable. Both her parents had written mercy petitions for Afzal Guru to the President of India. Atishi herself supports those who try to insult India. You can imagine what would happen if such a person becomes CM,” Tiwari said in his statement.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari on Monday criticized AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal for stepping down as Chief Minister, saying his resignation cannot make up for the damage done to Delhi.

"If he resigns, that's fine. But even if he doesn’t, what’s left of Delhi? He has worsened the situation in the national capital, and his resignation can't undo the harm," Tiwari told IANS.

Tiwari accused Kejriwal of causing widespread problems for the city. "Kejriwal has brought immense suffering to Delhi. He has turned the youth into drunkards, left streets in disrepair, and caused water and electricity bills to soar. He denied ration cards to the poor and opposed the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana."

Referring to incidents during heavy rains, he added, "Youngsters drowned in the basements of coaching centers, yet Kejriwal seeks sympathy from the public."

Tiwari also made a sharp remark about Kejriwal, comparing him to a fox. "A fox kills its own children. Kejriwal is that kind of person," he claimed.

Reacting to Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit's comment that Kejriwal is the "sole significant figure" in AAP while others are like "domestic servants," Tiwari said he would refrain from using such language. "We won’t talk like that. Many from Kejriwal's team have left, and more will follow. Some people are still with him but don’t trust him. I won't use such terms, but even AAP MLAs feel insulted because of him."

While Kejriwal will meet L-G Vinai Saxena to tender his resignation, Atishi will meet him to stake claim to form the new government.

"It is a mixed feeling. Most loved CM of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal has resigned and he has paved the way for the dynamic lady Atishi to be the CM. It is a mixed feeling; I am happy for her because I have worked with her in the last (Goa) Assembly elections," says Goa AAP chief Amit Palekar.

Atishi has been named by the party as the new Delhi CM.

Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday criticized the appointment of AAP leader Atishi as Delhi’s next CM, calling her a "figurehead" while asserting that Arvind Kejriwal would continue to control the government from behind the scenes.

"First of all, I congratulate her for being appointed as the next CM of the national capital, but we all know the remote control of Atishi will be in the hands of Arvind Kejriwal. He will run the Delhi government from behind," Chandrasekhar said as quoted by IANS

The BJP leader went on to criticize Kejriwal, stating that his actions in power have sharply diverged from his promises of a corruption-free government. "When Kejriwal entered politics in 2009-2010, he promised a clean government. However, when in power, he misappropriated public funds and was implicated in the Delhi liquor scam," Chandrasekhar added, pointing to the alleged corruption surrounding Kejriwal.

Chandrasekhar further argued that Kejriwal should have resigned earlier when he was first arrested, adding, "Driven by shame and self-respect, he should have stepped down. Instead, he only resigned now because the Supreme Court ruled that he cannot continue as Chief Minister. Despite being out on bail, he cannot hold the position due to the evidence against him."

Atishi's appointment follows Kejriwal’s resignation after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in the CBI case linked to the Delhi liquor policy. Conditions were imposed on Kejriwal, including restrictions on visiting his office and the Secretariat.

Atishi, a Rhodes Scholar and Oxford University graduate, holds key portfolios like Education and Public Works Department in the Delhi government. Elected as the MLA from Kalkaji, she assumed ministerial responsibilities after the arrest of Manish Sisodia. Despite losing the 2019 Lok Sabha election for the East Delhi seat to BJP's Gautam Gambhir, Atishi was elected as an MLA from the Kalkaji constituency in 2020. She was appointed as a minister in March 2023 following Sisodia's arrest.

Atishi’s rise has been marked by controversies. Soon after her nomination, Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal voiced disapproval, accusing Atishi's family of connections to Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist Afzal Guru and alleging that her parents had advocated for mercy petitions on Guru's behalf. Reports also link her mother, Tripta Wahi, to S.A.R. Geelani, a known sympathizer of Guru. Additionally, her father, Vijay Singh, edits Revolutionary Democracy, a communist website defending the legacy of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

Originally named Atishi Marlena, reflecting her parents' Marxist-Leninist ideology, she dropped "Marlena" in 2019, citing concerns that it could be misinterpreted as a Christian name during the Lok Sabha elections.

Reiterating AAP's call for early elections in Delhi, party leader Gopal Rai said on Tuesday that Atishi will serve as chief minister until Arvind Kejriwal is re-elected with a strong majority.

"When Arvind Kejriwal decided to resign, a legislative party meeting was held today. It was unanimously agreed that until the next elections, which we aim to hold by October-November, and the public elects Arvind Kejriwal as CM with a strong majority, Atishi will take on the role of chief minister," Gopal Rai stated during a press conference.
