Valpoi torrential rainfall sets record, crosses 200 inches
Panaji: The Valpoi rain gauge station has set a new record this monsoon, surpassing 200 inches of seasonal rainfall with a total of 5,505.4mm (approximately 216 inches). This milestone comes after a torrential downpour over the past three days, contributing substantially to the total.
Hot on Valpoi’s heels is the Sanguem station, which has recorded 5,409.4mm of rainfall this season.

The heavy rains have also positively impacted other areas, with Margao’s rain gauge station crossing the 4,000mm mark, reporting 4,017.3mm as of Thursday. Meanwhile, Mapusa is steadily inching towards this mark, having recorded 3,955.1 mm.
In total, of the 13 rain gauge stations across Goa, eight have now crossed the 4,000mm threshold, with two stations surpassing 5,000mm. However, not all areas have fared equally. Dabolim has recorded the lowest rainfall at 3,494.3mm.
The southwest monsoon is currently active over Goa, bringing light to moderate rainfall across most areas of the state on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that this pattern is likely to continue until Oct 2.
Additionally, squally weather is expected along and off the south Maharashtra-Goa coast, with wind speeds reaching 35 to 45kmph, gusting up to 55kmph. Fishermen are strongly advised to refrain from venturing into these waters.
As of Sep 26, Goa’s overall seasonal rainfall stands at 172 inches. With more rain potentially on the horizon, the southwest monsoon season is likely to end on a high note this year.
