The Sydney Harbour Bridge originally had 6 road lanes and 4 Railway Lines. The 2 Western side Railway Lines still carry North Shore trains. The 2 Eastern side Railway Lines were meant for a Railway to the Northern Beaches. When that was abandoned the tracks were used for trams Tram. The Tracks ran from North Sydney Station across a bridge over the Pacific Highway and to the Eastern side of the Harbour Bridge then into tunnels and emerged in Wynyard station Platforms 1 & 2. (now ghost platforms)

Part of the northbound siding tunnel from St James station intended for the Gladesville line is rumoured to have been used by General Macarthur as his wartime headquarters. The tunnel ends under the Mitchell Library where it is believed that a pilot tunnel housed the command centre. Staff at the centre were supposedly billeted at the nearby Metropole Hotel. A set of wooden steps led down from the middle of the road opposite the State Library. A manhole above the stairwell still exists.
