Before & After: Discarded Dresser Becomes Clever Kitchen Counter

Jason’s studio apartment lacked sufficient counter space, so when he saw this IKEA dresser on the side of the road, he snagged it. See how he made it work for his kitchen: From Jason: I was driving home from work when I glanced over to see a couple moving out of their house. Three Ikea dressers were sitting on their front lawn with “Free” signs taped to each. 20 minutes later I had all three loaded into my truck. This is the first one I attempted to tackle.

Primarily for makeup and skincare because a certain 2 year old that lives here is very into all of it and it needs to go up higher 😂 Anyway - I wanted to keep this easy-ish so I started with a cheap target dresser that I installed on a 2x4 base. I then jigsawed a cute baseboard for it because, well, it’s cute. And I built a shelving unit to go on top out of 16” project panels (found in the wood aisle). I secured this into the ceiling and dresser, and the dresser is screwed into the studs. I added 1x2 trim to the shelves, crown, trim to the drawers, and cut down a marble shower bench to use as a countertop that I trimmed out in marble pencil trim! An Antique Dresser Turned Work Station

Here's a handsome antique art deco dresser that I've had in my workshop all summer. It initially belonged to a client who refinished it himself in red but didn't care for the end result.
