UK General Insurance: The Top Trends in 2024 for Data 🔍 As we come to the end of 2024, there have been a few focus areas within GI Data, mostly in line with process and product improvements. This goes hand in hand with a majority of insurers moving to a data driven approach (and rightly so!) Some of the top insights I've seen have been: Advanced Predictive Analytics 📈 Insurers are leveraging predictive analytics to enhance risk assessment, optimisation and pricing models. By analyzing historical/market data and identifying patterns, companies are able to predict future claims more accurately and set premiums accordingly. AI-Powered Fraud Detection 🕵️‍♂️ Artificial intelligence is playing a crucial role in detecting and preventing fraud, which is on the rise. Machine learning algorithms are being used to identify suspicious activities and anomalies in real-time, reducing fraudulent claims and saving costs. Customer-Centric Solutions 💡 Investment into data analytics is enabling insurers to offer more personalized and customer-centric solutions. There has been an increase in recent years on digital based products/online only policy options, so this is essential to ensure customer experience is still where it needs to be. By understanding customer behavior and preferences, insurers can tailor their products and services to meet individual needs, improving customer satisfaction and retention. Telematics and Usage-Based Insurance 🚗 The adoption of telematics and usage-based insurance (UBI) has increased this year. By collecting data on driving behavior through IoT devices, insurers can offer more flexible and fair pricing models, rewarding safe drivers with lower premiums - a big consideration in this economy! Enhanced Claims Processing ⚙️ Analytics is streamlining the claims process, making it faster and more efficient. Exciting News in the Insurance World! Direct Line has just accepted a new offer from Aviva, valuing the company at £3.6bn. This deal, priced at 275p per share, is set to shake up the UK insurance market. 🔹 What's Happening: Aviva's third bid, after initial offers of 250p and 261p, finally got the green light. Direct Line's board, initially hesitant, now sees great potential in this merger. Together, they'll control over 20% of the motor insurance market and 15% of the home insurance sector. 🔹 Why It Matters: Aviva will boost its position in car insurance, where Direct Line is currently second to Admiral. The deal will be reviewed by competition authorities and the Bank of England. 🔹 Changes Ahead: Direct Line plans to cut 550 jobs as part of a £50m cost-saving turnaround plan. CEO Adam Winslow, who recently joined from Aviva, is optimistic about the new leadership team's strategy. 🔹 Market Buzz: Direct Line shares jumped nearly 7% to 252p, valuing the company at £3.3bn. Ambitions to be a 'Head of' within actuarial in the general insurance space? It is never too early to be thinking about how you are going to set yourself up to be in line for 'Head of' positions within pricing, reserving or capital. Typically this space is quite competitive and therefore the experience you gain in your early career can be beneficial. See below skills which hiring managers will usually look for in these senior positions - how many of them do you tick? - FIA qualification, especially if this is a Lloyd's/London Market hire - Examples of managing teams (this is an obvious one to state) - Leading transformation projects - this one is becoming a more popular requirement for 'head of' vacancies for 2024 - Examples of C-suite interaction - Evidence of gaining promotions at the same company - A blend of consulting and in-house experience (usually for Head of Reserving positions) - Examples of thought leadership and innovation as a team leader As always happy to have a confidential chat if you want to discuss career plans. Q3 Permanent Insurance Change & Transformation Update   ✅ Q3 saw a decline in permanent Job volumes for first time this year by circa 20% on Q1/Q2. ✅ This may partially be due to the increase I have seen from my clients looking internally for resource, before engaging with the external market. This is really positive for employees seeking career progression, or the opportunity to transition into different positions/skill sets within their existing organisations. ✅ July and August were slower months, which typically reflects the pre-COVID market. The impact of COVID disrupted traditional patterns, so is this a return to a more typical recruitment cycle? ✅ Business analysts and project managers continue to be the most sought-after skill sets. ✅ Blueprint 2 is coming up in conversation more regularly with my clients, even with the phase one launch being further delayed. BP2 is another factor for the already high demand for candidates with previous Lloyd's / London Market experience. ✅The broker market shows no sign of slowing down and is driving much of the permanent recruitment need. Many brokers are growing through acquisition and continue to ramp up their change/transformation head count to support growing portfolios / post M&A integration. ✅Product owner volumes are gradually increasing, and the limited candidate pool is prompting many businesses to transition existing business analysts into PO positions. ✅ Permanent salaries have remained consistent with positions at the £75,000 - £100,000 mark seeing the most activity. ✅ I'm still seeing a lack of activity at the £100,000 + mark but am hopeful we will see more opportunities at this level through Q4 and into 2025. ✅ As I have mentioned previously there has been an increase in senior candidates securing positions through their own network, with many of these opportunities not even going to market. Bruce Carnegie-Brown, chairman of Lloyd’s of London, has objected to the redevelopment of the former Aviva building near Leadenhall Market into a 73-story skyscraper, known as 1 Undershaft. He argues it would eliminate an important public space. The skyscraper, designed by Eric Parry, would be nearly as tall as The Shard and include an 11th-floor public garden. Some architects also oppose the new design, preferring the existing modernist structure. A vote on the project is scheduled for later today【CityAM】 What do we all think? Broking to Underwriting - the road can be bumpy but it is well travelled. Here are the things to consider to when you want to shift from a broking role to one in Underwriting: Look into MGAs - usually the first thing someone will do when they look to make the transition to Underwriter is to look into the major insurers. While this can be a great path- don't ignore the MGA route. there are so many transferable skills that you will have as a Broker that you can take into the business and your network of Brokers that you have built up over your time as a Broker will be invaluable to them. Networking is your best friend - take part in local Insurance Institute activities. Meet people, ask about their journeys. They say knowledge is power but I would argue network is even more so. Be prepared you may need to take a slight salary decrease in order to progress. This is a tough one and I know how frustrating it is when it happens. But the truth is that if you're learning a new role, you will need to be trained and that comes at a cost which means that salaries may be lower. But not for long. sometimes a small step back is required to propel you forward. #GetRecruitedUK
