about

Unreleased Goa Records is very proud to unleash the double album Malfunction, a new release by Shaman, the musical project of Swedish artist Andreas Henning. This special album, available for digital download and streaming, presents rare, unreleased tracks composed by Andreas between 1997 and 2000—a collection that offers a unique glimpse into Shaman’s early sound and evolution.

The journey of Shaman began in 1998 when Andreas first discovered Fast Tracker II, a music software that allowed him to experiment with electronic music production. Enthralled by the potential of creating his sounds, he soon moved to the more advanced Buzz, a program that opened up new possibilities with synths and effects. Driven by friends’ encouragement, Andreas sent a demo to Digital Structures, resulting in his debut release, with the track “Safari,” and the birth of Shaman.

Malfunction contains two distinctive parts, LFO (Tracks 1-8) and New Era (Tracks 9-16), each representing a period of exploration and experimentation in Andreas’s early years. While “LFO” is inspired by the term Low-Frequency Oscillator, chosen simply because it sounded cool, these tracks reveal a progressive style with atmospheric build-ups rather than high-intensity drops, creating immersive soundscapes. As Andreas explains, the name Shaman reflects his view of trance music as a tool for journeying and self-discovery, much like the traditional shamanic use of drums to induce a trance state.

Influenced by iconic artists like Man With No Name, Asia 2001, Astral Projection, and MFG, Andreas’s sound draws from a wide range of inspirations, adding layers of dark, rhythmic progression and intricate sound design. While leaning toward progressive trance, his music flows in subtle waves, inviting listeners to lose themselves in hypnotic rhythms. Influences from Atmos, Ticon, Der Dritte Raum, Tarsis, Haldolium, and Son Kite shine through, each artist leaving a mark on his distinctive style.

Recorded entirely with software in his early years, the tracks in Malfunction were composed using programs like Jeskola Buzz, Reason, and Logic. Andreas’s setup eventually grew to include hardware like the Novation K-Station, Access Virus C, and Alesis Monitor One Mk2 monitors. However, the album’s tracks were primarily crafted in software alone, giving them a raw, foundational feel.

Malfunction is more than just an album; it’s a chronicle of Shaman’s formative years and a tribute to the sounds of the late 90s. With its dark beats, twisted melodies, and ambient progressions, this double album offers fans a rare look at the roots of Shaman’s journey in electronic music.
