‘Hiraeth’ is a Welsh word that has no single English equivalent. A sense of longing for a past place, person or time is often used to try to describe its meaning, as well as ‘homesickness’ and nostalgia. It can include grief or sadness for who or what you may have lost, and which makes your ‘home’ unlike the one you remember. A home that you cannot return to, which no longer exists, or maybe never was.
