    Gales of November

Each November, Duluth’s Lake Superior shoreline transforms into a dramatic, awe-inspiring spectacle as powerful winds stir up towering waves — sometimes reaching 20 feet or more. Known as the Gales of November, this seasonal phenomenon draws storm chasers, photographers, and thrill-seeking surfers to the North Shore for front-row views of nature’s raw power. Whether you’re watching from the safety of the Lakewalk, snapping photos near the aerial lift bridge, or catching waves at Stoney Point, this is Duluth’s storm season at its most iconic. With cozy coffee shops nearby and lakeside hotels offering unbeatable views, there’s no better time to experience the rugged beauty of Lake Superior. Pro tip: Dress warm, bring your camera, and always keep a safe distance from crashing waves. This is the North Shore’s wild side — unpredictable, unforgettable, and uniquely Duluth.

    Stoney Point

Scenic Drive | Duluth & Two Harbors, MN Just northeast of Duluth along Scenic Highway 61, Stoney Point offers one of the most jaw-dropping stretches of Lake Superior shoreline. This one-mile gravel loop is tucked between Duluth and Two Harbors, making it an easy detour for anyone craving fresh air, wild waves, and peaceful views. On calm days, you’ll find folks basking on ledgerock, skipping stones, hunting rocks, and sharing a picnic with friends, family, or four-legged companions. When storms roll in? It’s one of the best spots on the North Shore for wave-watching — and if you’re lucky, you might even spot freshwater surfers chasing the perfect winter swell. (Yes, surfing. On Lake Superior.) Nature lovers will enjoy the wildflowers lining the quiet country road, while anglers can try their luck with lake trout fishing early in the season. And for those short on time or mobility? The lake views are spectacular from the comfort of your car. Located off Scenic Hwy 61 near mile marker 15 — look for Stoney Point Drive (Lake County 222).

The Lakewalk Stretching from Bayfront Park to Brighton Beach | Duluth, MN One of Duluth’s most iconic outdoor experiences, the Lakewalk is nearly 8 miles of paved path winding along the shores of Lake Superior. Whether you’re strolling hand-in-hand past lighthouses and sailboats, birdwatching near native fruit trees, or biking as a family with waves crashing nearby, the Lakewalk offers a scenic slice of the North Shore for every pace. Originally a modest half-mile path built in 1986, the Lakewalk has grown — thanks to the dedication of local advocates like Friends of the Lakewalk. Today, it connects parks, beaches, public art, and restaurants, with amenities like restrooms, picnic tables, and bike-friendly trails along the way. Pro Tip: Use this mile-by-mile guide to plan your stops, from Canal Park’s sweet shops to Brighton Beach’s rocky shoreline. Take a virtual tour of the Lakewalk.
