Begin Again Again
04:39
|
|
||
|
Another false beginning, it seems you jumped the gun again
You’re just so far from winning, close your eyes and count to ten
Insufficient preparation, you tripped over your own feet
It’s three rungs up the ladder, you’re progressing steadily
Suddenly sliding down an adder, confounding your expectancy
No way you could have seen that coming
A serpentine hit and run, back to square one, and yet you make the choice…
To begin again again
For the dozenth time you begin again again
So take a moment, catch your breath
Brace your face, set your eyes ahead
And begin again, again, again, again
You’ve set out on the wrong foot, got out the wrong side of the bed
And you’re wearing mismatched socks, and you don’t know where to go next
But it doesn’t matter how many times life has brought you down
You’ve run aground and still you make the choice…
To begin again again
For the hundredth time you begin again again
So take a moment, catch your breath
Brace your face, set your eyes ahead
And begin again, again, again, again
You won’t let it bring you down
Your tenacious optimism spurs you on
I find myself inspired by your dogged perseverance
So I’ll follow your example, I’ll drag my clean trousers on
Stumble out the front door resolved to face another day
Come what may, what ever’s out there waiting I’m prepared
To begin again again
For the thousandth time I’ll begin again again
I’m ready to begin again again
For the umpteenth time I’ll begin again again
I’ll take a moment, catch my breath
Brace my face, set my eyes ahead
Lock my feet on the starting blocks
Fire the pistol and I’m off
Begin again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again

The Stargazer
07:21
|
|
||
|
As the embers fade from white to red and the light from the campfire slowly dies
Clouds drift darkly to the west and he turns his attention to the sky
Watching for the first light above as humankind has done for centuries
His soul escaping, mind set free as he observes the heavens in their constancy
Stargazer - looking up into the night
Stargazer - praying for a cloudless sky
Stargazer - horizon growing exponentially
Absorbing the beauty, dwelling in glory
Some look for shapes and patterns in the lights
Some give names to each one
Some try to divine some meaning in the way they move
Some measure brightness and calculate the distance, distance
But he just sits and stares, absorbing all the beauty, dwelling in the glory
Stargazer - looking up into the night
Stargazer - praying for a cloudless sky
Stargazer - horizon growing exponentially
Absorbing the beauty, dwelling in glory
Beholding the mystery of majestic infinity

From the transvolcanic mountain range in southern Mexico
Heading north as far as they can go
It can take five generations to reach their destination
Their short lives spent fluttering and laying eggs
Their caterpillars hatch and instinctively continue
The adventure their parents have begun
And those who start the mission will never see its end
But their children’s children’s children will win through
A journey of five lifetimes (navigating)
over six thousand miles (over a nation)
Crossing a continent and back again
(Navigating over a nation)
Summer’s days are ending, the evening’s drawing in
Our heroes start to hear the southern call
And as the nights grow colder their journey will begin
Returning to the land of their mothers
But these butterflies are not like quite their antecedents
With nearly thrice the lifespan they head south
They can cover thousands of miles before they’re done
Returning to a place they’ve never been!
A journey of five lifetimes (navigating)
Over six thousand miles (over a nation)
Crossing a continent and back again
Join the celebration (as they cluster)
Of this natural phenomenon (in their thousands)
Dia de los Muertos can begin

Better Than This?

There was no robot uprising
There was no human extermination
There was no single point when the machines became self-aware
There was no corruption of the source code
There was no artificial übermensch
There was no fundamental misunderstanding of the zeroth law
I’ve read all the books and seen several of the films
The subjugation of mankind was a lot more benign
Created to create
Can’t slow its propagation
Will it write a song that is better than this?
No need to write or sing or draw
The algorithm does it for you
Can it write a song that is better than this?
There was no suppression of our free will
There was no self-fulfilling prophecy
There was no well intentioned extremist whose methods were evil
Enthusiastically we submit to their control
Unlike any prediction from the world of science fiction
Created to create
Can’t slow its propagation
Will it write a song that is better than this?
No need to write or sing or draw
The algorithm does it for you
Can it write a song that is better than this?
Ease and speed and price take precedence (oh oh oh)
Humankind turns its back on competence (oh oh oh)
The outcome is more important than the process (it’s getting stronger every day)
The ersatz mind, having nearly exhausted (oh oh oh)
the finite supply of human resources (oh oh oh)
is beginning to derive from its own output (it’s getting stronger every day)
With each successive iteration
Comes greater corruption of each creation
Ouroboros has never had quite so many fingers
Created to create
Can’t slow its propagation
I’m scared it can write a song that is better than this
No need to write or sing or draw
The algorithm does it for you
It’s already written several songs that are better than this

A Way With The Fairies
06:33
|

High summer 1917, down by the beck we played make believe
Building our dreams on our own imaginations, playing make believe
At the end of the garden, our shoes and socks wet through
Soaked to our knees, mother was not best pleased!
Mythological creatures
Captured in perfect images
The only place we had been was away with the fairies
Daddy let us use his camera and by the beck we made our photographs
Enticing out our little friends on flowers and trees we took our photographs
They never knew their tiny faces would bring celebrity
And Doctor Doyle printed them in his magazine (an epoch-making event)
And all the world saw the things that we had seen
Supernatural phenomena (eliminate the impossible)
Theosophical ephemera (what remains, though improbable, is the truth)
The only place we had been was away with the fairies
Mythological creatures (eliminate the impossible)
Captured in perfect images (what remains, though improbable, is the truth)
You can’t deny that we had a way with the fairies!
As the attention grew, the harder it became to take it back
And the story spread, grew out of control, we couldn’t take it back
Too late to confess and they won’t forget, we couldn’t take it back
It was uniquely strange, it was uniquely ours, we didn’t want to share
But Doctor Doyle wanted desperately to believe (an epoch in human thought)
Our childhood game had become just a bit too real, oh
Mythological creatures (eliminate the improbable)
Captured in perfect innocence (what remains, though impossible, is the truth)
You must admit that we had a way with the fairies

The Undersea Tunnel
04:28
|
|
||
|
A train under the ocean
A handshake over the water
A bridge between our peoples
And a sign of hope
A shrinking continent
We’re closer together than ever
A symbol of our greater unity, oh
Destination another nation
Human beings journey back and forth under the sea
We’re out of the city in minutes
Under the Thames and over the Medway
Bridges and tunnels, cuttings embankments
Racing to the South-East
Then plunging into darkness…
Jaillissant au soleil
Puis filant à travers la campagne
Le monde devenant plus petit
Cultures et cités, visages et contrées
Voyage vers l’avenir!
Destination, une autre nation
Les humains vont et viennent sous la mer
One world, one people
United with our shared ideals
Human beings journey back and forth under the sea, oh

Stained Glass

The light passing through them
The colours projected on the flags of the stone floor
The history, the story
Abstract or figurative, literal or narrative
Oh there’s just enough light to see the way through the dancing dust motes
Oh these coloured lights they shine light for you, for you
Illuminated wall decorations
Not for looking through, but beholding
Historical pictorial artwork
Created with a mind to stand the test of time
Shine the light into the darker places
To elevate and inspire
The heat of the furnace
Made in fire the silica starts to melt
The flames, engulfing
Channelling the energy of the sun to refine the glass
Pieces, parts and fragments
Selected, shaped and assembled
Then arranged into unique patterns for you, for you
Illuminated wall decorations
Not for looking through, but beholding
Historical pictorial artwork
Created with a mind to stand the test of time
Shine the light into the darker places
To elevate and inspire
Molten glass is blended with metallic oxide powders
Swirling into infinity, conjuring deep colours
Copper, gold and cobalt, blues and reds and greens
Illuminated wall decorations
Historical pictorial artwork
Illuminated wall decorations
Not for looking through, but beholding
Historical pictorial artwork
Created with a mind to stand the test of time
Shine the light into the darker places
To elevate and inspire
