Tape Release on Coherant States.
Coherent States is excited to announce the release of Will Guthrie’s new album “Lampo”, containing brand new material recorded during his 2024 performance at the Lampo event series in Chicago. In his third session for the series, Will presented a fresh concept based on brief and recurring modules generated solely by acoustic drums and percussion, without any use of electronics. The experimental structures that together form the 32 minutes of the performance deliberately deviate and reintegrate across an actively shifting tempo, constructing powerful overlapping rhythmic patterns which result in a raw and compelling sonic experience. Being the first release under his own name for a good while (last one was 2021’s “People Pleaser Pt. II” LP), “Lampo” takes its place as a parallel universe between many unique compositional and improvisational moments of a heavily active and restless career - an intense solo percussion documentation, situated between the exceptional worlds of free jazz, musique concrète and non western musical influences, which collectively offer a glimpse into the great art of Will Guthrie.
Will Guthrie is an Australian experimental drummer and composer based in France, renowned for his highly sophisticated rhythmic approach and undeniable physicality. Guthrie first gained recognition in 1997, winning the Wangaratta National Jazz Awards, and subsequently worked with many of Australia's celebrated jazz musicians, including Mark Simmonds, Julien Wilson, and Ren Walters. His practice then made a critical turn towards junk electronics, extreme amplification, and electroacoustic techniques in the new millennium. In the last decade, he has returned to acoustic percussion with a particularly aggressive playing style, developing solo works defined by a radical monomelody and earth-shaking explorations of gongs and metallic percussion. This work is distinguished by its deep, contemporary engagement with Javanese Gamelan and South Indian Carnatic music. Guthrie leads the contemporary hybrid gamelan ensemble ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH and is a dedicated DIY organizer, having co-founded the Make It Up Club (Australia's longest-running concert series for improvised music). With over 50 albums released on his own Antboy Music and seminal labels like Black Truffle, Editions Mego, Erstwhile Records, iDEAL Recordings and others, his vast collaborative history includes Mark Fell, Oren Ambarchi, Junko, Rudolf Eb.er, Sarah Hennies and Jean-Luc Guionnet among many others.
