A.C. Milan

Associazione Calcio Milan (Italian pronunciation: [assotʃatˈtsjoːne ˈkaltʃo ˈmiːlan]), commonly referred to as A.C. Milan or simply Milan, is a professional Italian football club based in Milan, Lombardy, that plays in Serie A. Milan was founded in 1899 by English lace-maker Herbert Kilpin and businessman Alfred Edwards among others. The club has spent its entire history, with the exception of the 1980–81 and 1982–83 seasons, in the top flight of Italian football, known as Serie A since 1929–30.

With 18 officially recognised UEFA and FIFA titles, they are the second most successful club in the world in terms of number of international titles, together with Boca Juniors and Real Madrid, and behind Al Ahly with twenty titles. Milan has won a joint record of three Intercontinental Cups and one of its successor, the FIFA Club World Cup. Milan have also won the European Cup/Champions League on seven occasions, second only to Real Madrid. They have also won the UEFA Super Cup a joint record five times and the Cup Winners' Cup twice. Milan has won every major competition in which it has competed, with the exception of the Europa League (in this competition they have lost two semi-finals in 1972 and in 2002). Domestically, with 18 league titles Milan is the joint-second most successful club in Serie A behind Juventus (31 titles), along with local rivals Inter. They have also won the Coppa Italia five times, as well as six Supercoppa Italiana triumphs.

2006–07 A.C. Milan season

The 2006–07 season has had its ups and downs for Milan. Having started the season with an 8-point penalty due to the Italian football scandal, a bad run of results where Milan failed to win for 9 matches in a row left them in a lowly 15th place on only 11 points. After two consecutive losses against Atalanta and Roma, Milan had a streak of seven consecutive matches without defeat. Two wins against Catania and Udinese left Milan only 6 points behind fourth place and qualification for the Champions League. Milan eventually finished fourth in the league, behind Lazio. After showing a bad physical condition throughout most of the autumn, the team took a January retreat in Malta, to regain condition and try to achieve a fourth-place finish in Serie A and further progression in the Champions League.

Milan's performances in the Champions League were a different story. Drawn in a group described as easy by some pundits, with AEK Athens, Lille and Anderlecht, Milan comfortably won the group. Milan eventually won the Champions League, overcoming Celtic in the round of 16, Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, Manchester United in the semi-finals and Liverpool in the final. Kaká was in particular good form for Milan in the Champions League, scoring 10 goals in 12 matches and winning that year's Champions League Golden Boot.

2007–08 A.C. Milan season

During the 2007–08 season, Associazione Calcio Milan played its 74th Serie A season in the club's existence. Milan competed in Serie A, finishing 5th and failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2001–02, as well as in the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League, being knocked out in the Round of 16 in both competitions. As winners of the 2006–07 UEFA Champions League Milan competed in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, winning both competitions.

    Milan

Milan (English /mˈlæn/ or US /məˈlɑːn/;Lombard, Milanese variant: Milan [miˈlã]),Italian: Milano [miˈlaːno]), the second-most populous city in Italy, is the capital of Lombardy. The city proper has a population of about 1.3 million, while its urban area (the 5th-largest in the EU) comprises an estimated 5 million people (former Provinces of Milan and Monza-Brianza, with other Comuni included in the former Province of Varese). The enormous suburban sprawl that followed the post-war boom of the 1950s–1960s has resulted in a polycentric metropolitan area, known as Greater Milan, of 7 to 10 million people, stretching over the provinces of Milan, Bergamo, Como, Lecco, Lodi, Monza and Brianza, Pavia, Varese and Novara. The Milan metropolitan region is part of the so-called Blue Banana, the area of Europe with the highest population and industrial density. In terms of GDP, Milan has the third largest economy among EU cities (after London and Paris) and the largest among European non-capital cities.

    Milan (given name)

Milan (Cyrillic: Милан) is a common Slavic male name and, less commonly, an Indian and Roman name. In Eastern European context, it is derived from the Slavic element mil, with meanings kind, loving, and gracious. Milan was originally a diminutive or nickname for those whose Slavic names began with "Mil-". It is used predominantly by Czechs, Slovaks and Serbs but also frequently in Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria and India. (Hungarian: Milán.) It was in the top 5 names for boys born in Serbia in 2012. It was in the top 20 names for boys born in Slovakia in 2004. It was the eighth most popular name for boys born in the Netherlands in 2007, and seventh in Flanders in 2009.

    Eastern European origin and use

It originates from the Old Slavic word mil, variant: mio, i.e. "beloved", "pleasant", "dear" which is common at the beginning of many Slavic names. This is the same root in Serbian names like Miloslav, Milomir, Milica, Milka, Miloš, Milutin, Miodrag, Miomir etc. most of which were first recorded in Serbian sources already in the pre-Nemanjić Age.
