I was never a fan of Barbra Streisand, as I found much of her singing very overblown and pretentious. One day, I was listening to the radio, and I heard a fine version of Michel Legrand's beautiful "You Must Believe In Spring". I got a pen and paper and waited to note down the name of this new, exciting singer. It was the 66 year old Barbra Streisand.
So I swallowed my prejudice and plumped for the double CD. I don't know if the quartet versions are the same recordings as the orchestral arrangements with the orchestra stripped out, and, frankly, I don't care. They're both some of the most beautiful recordings of old favourite songs that I have heard in some time.
What there is on this album is a gentleness and tenderness that I imagine very few people could achieve. Not a duff note is sung, even where the voice inevitably shows a little roughness (and it is very little indeed). Particularly beautiful is the Bergman song "Where Do You Start?", revived by Tony Bennett on "The Art Of Romance" in 2004, and beautifully done here by Miss Streisand. Other songs have also been done before by Bennett, and are done just as beautifully here: "The Gentle Rain" and "A Time For Love", being two beautiful examples. "A Time For Love" may well be one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and this may well be the best version - not an easy feat.
Highly recommended, and may well turn me into a fan of this lady - something I never thought I would say. If you are a Streisand fan, I'm sure you'll love this anyway (and hate this review). But if you've ever been put off by her grandstanding, give this one a try. I don't think you'll regret it.

Barbra sings a collection of jazz standards and love songs. This is a collection of two CDs - one with trio - stripped down arrangments, produced by Diana Krall and the other CD features an incredibly lush orchestra with strings arranged by Johnny Mandel.
When I look at the contents of the album, it reminds me of what Barbra said in her last interview with Oprah, when Oprah asked her what sort of music or singer she listens to - she said she likes the singer, Shirley Horn. I think that a lot of inspirations for this album came from Shirley Horn's "Here's to Life".
In fact, Barbra employed the same arranger, Johnny Mandel who also arranged and conducted the orchestra for Shirley Horn's sublime album, "Here's to life". Barbra sings three songs; "Here's to Life", "A Time For Love", "Where do you start?", all of which are also presented in Shirley Horn's "Here's to life" album. I think some of the songs on this album are quite challenging and lyric-driven songs. She slows down her tempo in these melodic and lyrical ballads such as "A Time For Love" and Nancy Wilson's signature song, "Love Dance" that demands perfect phrasing and perfect understanding of melancholy lyrics.
Barbra is the best interpreter of Alan and Marilyn Bergman's poetic lyrics and Michel Legrand's haunting melody. She recorded "You must believe in spring" with a full orchestra for this album. But she decided not to use the orchestral version because she always believes in "less is more approach" and the result of this performance is incredibly wistful and intimate.
This album shows Barbra's maturity as an artist as well as a singer. It is one of her greatest and the most artistic records of all time.

After a long hard day at work, it has been great to get home and chill out to Barbra singing of rain, of springtime, love and life. The relaxing style comprises jazz ballads and gentle bossa novas with superb subtle orchestrations (mostly by the brilliant Johnny Mandel). And that voice! Wow! Superb!
The production is by Diana Krall, whose name was unknown to me prior to purchasing this disc. Admittedly the clinging to just the one style can lead to the feeling that one songs merges into the next, but if Barbra soothes my furrowed brow that way, who am I to complain?
There are two songs that fail to impress. The first is the Jacques Brel classic `If You Go Away', which somehow remains unconvincing: I prefer Barbra's live version. I think the review in the Independent newspaper is right when it described the song as "impeccably delivered, but never approaching the kind of revelatory interpretation that might cause a sharp intake of breath among listeners."
The other duff track is the `bonus' song on my CD, `You Must Believe in Spring', which appears here without orchestration and thus loses something in its communication.
The disc comes with Barbra's usual generous sleevenotes.

It is some years since we purchased a Streisand CD, so I listened to this one with great interest and in my opinion she is as good as ever. It is true and descernable, that she takes care not to stretch herself too much, but the tone and pitch are as good as ever. Unlike many modern singers (Not All) she is always perfectly in tune with her diction excellent, as ever!
She has chosen her material carefully, and again I would say, her choice doesn't dissapoint. Hats off also to Dianne Krall for her valuable input on the disc.

As usual Barbra performs to perfection. This is clearly a Diana Krall production and I would have liked a more up beat song with a faster tempo included in the list. My favourite track is 'Where do you start' Any collaboration between Johnny Mandel and the Bergmans has to be good listening and Barbra sings this beautifully.
The CD has been recorded and produced very quickly and likely to please Barbra's many fans. The result is another no 1 hit in the album charts.Barbra being the only singer to have a no 1 album hit in the last 5 decades.
