Good for world building.

Roman Mars was pretty much on-point in vexillological TED talk; Good Flag, Bad Flag is more a pamphlet than a book. But it's direct, concise, and easy for anyone to understand, so it serves its purpose. It can be read over 10 to 15 minutes, perhaps less.

Good Flag, Bad Flag covers the five essential standards necessary to avoid creating an abomination of a flag (paging Milwaukee, Wisconsin). There's an abundance of examples and even some useful general flag knowledge (more flag colors = higher production cost). It was all fascinating enough to leave me wanting a lot more. More flags, more breakdowns of bad flags, more origins of what how great flags came to be, etc. I think Ted Kaye could go bigger than this pamphlet (and maybe he has, I'm checking his literary history as we speak) but Good Flag, Bad Flag is a great start.

Random aside: I wish this book had a spine. It's a little flimsy as it is.

This booklet is a great introduction to the basics needed to design a decent flag. It's quite cheap, so pick up a copy! It is quite short, so I'd definitely call it a booklet and not a book. But it is useful and imparts a good bit of information in a small package.

It's worth noting that the "rules" are guidelines, and on occasion, it does make sense to break one or even two of them to create a great design. But if you're violating most or all of the rules, your flag design is probably poor.

Most US state flags are awful, and many of the US city flags are also poor. Hopefully, in the future, more emphasis will be placed on good design. This short booklet is a great way to learn about it yourself, and perhaps you can help pass that knowledge on to others.

Also, if you haven't already seen it, as many have recommended, view the video of the TED Talk from Roman Mars regarding flag design.

I love this thing. I keep a stack to hand out to interested parties. I just love the tenants laid out in this book. Makes everyday flag noticing far more interesting.

At 15 pages, "Good Flag, Bad Flag" is a more a pamphlet than a book. The author, Ted Kaye, lays out five basic principles for good flag design. He includes good, color illustrated examples of (surprise!) good flag design and bad flag design for each principle. At the end of the pamphlet is a sort of quiz to test your understanding although the author doesn't include an answer key. Some of the examples are questionable. The two-color flag of the Ukraine is "good" but the two-color flag of Poland is "bad," possibly because if one accidentally flies the Polish flag upside down it becomes the flag of Indonesia and/or Monaco.
In fairness, "Good Flag, Bad Flag" is not an in-depth look at flag design so much as it is a quick reference and primer for anyone interested in vexillology or who wants to design a flag. Short as it is, it still accomplishes this very well.

I got this after seeing Roman Mars' Ted Talk on vexillology (study of flags). The booklet is beautifully printed with interesting, to the point writing. This booklet is quick to read and perfect to leave out on a coffee table for friends to thumb through. I wish the cover were more durable because I would love to leave this in my classroom library (I am a teacher), but I don't think the booklet itself would survive.

It is my fault for not reading the description better. This is a very tiny, short book only a dozen or so pages.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is not a book.

Although the content of Good Flag, Bad Flag is good I was expecting a physical book with at least s spine and differing paper stocks.
Instead this product is essentially a cheap pamphlet you might unexpectedly pick up at a museum entrance and is therefore dreadfully over-priced.
