Kanye West skips the Met Gala
The Met Gala flooded our Instagram feeds with red carpet photographs of A-listers strutting their stuff in otherworldly design ensembles on Tuesday. From thoughts on Priyanka Chopra's custom Ralph Lauren to acknowledging the jaw-dropping perfection that is Rihanna, there was a lot going on very early in the morning. However, we couldn't help but notice that the only arm candy Kim Kardashian was sporting was the shine off of her gold gown. Kanye's absence was almost as noticeable as Sarah Jessica Parker's headdress—both not good.
Kanye West announces architecture arm
So where was Kanye? We're not one to guess but news that the rapper is looking to start a Yeezy architecture arm must mean that he's keeping busy. Kanye's admiration for design and architecture is no secret (“I really do believe that the world can be saved through design, and everything needs to actually be ‘architected,'” (Kanye in 2013, to a group of architecture students at the Harvard Graduate School of Design). His album Yeezus was inspired by the pioneer of modern architecture Le Corbusier, and he also spoke of his frustration at not being taken seriously as a designer in an interview with BBC Radio1 the same year. “I want to do product, I am a product person," said West. "Not just clothing but water bottle design, architecture... I make music but I shouldn't be limited to one place of creativity."
His Twitter announcement on May 7, 2018—"We're starting a Yeezy architecture arm called Yeezy Home. We're looking for architects and industrial designers who want to make the world better.”—should not come as a surprise. Especially since this was preluded by another Twitter announcement (this is definitely his medium of choice) that called for a broader understanding of his apparel brand. “Yeezy is no longer a fashion company we should be referred to as apparel or clothing or simply Yeezy.” By his own admission, Yeezy is the second fastest growing company in history” and Kanye is now drawing up plans for phase two, in line with his belief that architects are “people that wanna make things as dope as possible." Kanye also teased Twitterati with interior and exterior photographs on April 27, indicative of a possible aesthetic? We're dying to find out.
