Siqueira+Azul Redefines Modernist Living with Itaúna House Expansion

Photo © André Nazareth

The Itaúna House project embraces its foundation, a compact Oscar Niemeyer design situated within a bustling metropolitan area. By acquiring the neighboring property, the architects at Siqueira+Azul reimagined the space, integrating a lush garden characterized by both vertical and horizontal lines. This intervention not only expanded the property but also introduced a leisure annex that elegantly extends between the pool and garden, appearing to hover.

A Unified Design Through Independent Structures

The project designed by Siqueira+Azul, features three distinct constructions, each functioning independently yet interconnected through thoughtfully designed pathways, including passages, walkways, and stairs. These elements facilitate movement across the site while maintaining a cohesive architectural narrative. The interiors underwent significant adaptation to allow for new spatial experiences and a more dynamic use of the property.

Reinventing the Facades

A notable enhancement to the original structure is the addition of large pivoting panels, framed within a custom iron square mesh. These panels redefine the facades of the main blocks, creating fluid transitions between interior and exterior spaces. A long bench runs along the slabs, further emphasizing this continuity and improving the connection between indoor and outdoor areas.

Vertical Flow and Light Integration

A circular oculus introduces a striking architectural feature, serving as both an observation point and a source of natural light for the upper courtyard. This vertical axis is further emphasized by a helical staircase, which ascends to a tower element featuring expansive sliding glass panels. The interaction of light, space, and materials enriches the visual and functional aspects of the home.

A Natural Retreat

The leisure annex, crafted from natural materials like stone and concrete, provides a stark yet harmonious contrast to the main structures. Its design uses distinct planes and materials to create a dialogue between functionality and aesthetic refinement. This annex serves as a retreat within the urban setting, balancing the structured elegance of the garden with its minimalist yet inviting ambiance.
