The BMW X4 is a more stylish version of the compact X3 SUV. With more fastback-like styling, it’s what many consider a SUV Coupe. Power comes from a choice of turbocharged four and six cylinder engines. Those who want the highest levels of performance should look at the X4 M.

As a seven-eighths scale BMW X6, the X4 brings style at a more affordable price point.

BMW X4 Overview

The BMW X4 receives updates to its design, performance, and technology, solidifying its position as a sporty, coupe-style alternative to the X3. The X4 lineup starts at $51,800, plus a $995 destination fee, and includes the xDrive30i and the more powerful M40i variants.

The base X4 xDrive30i features a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, delivering 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds. The M40i trim is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine featuring a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, cutting the 0-60 mph time to 4.4 seconds. Both trims use an 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.

Exterior revisions include a larger kidney grille, thinner LED headlights, and redesigned taillights. The X4 M40i adds unique M-specific details such as black chrome tailpipes and aerodynamic enhancements. Inside, updates include a new center console with a standard 12.3-inch digital display running BMW's iDrive 7 system.

The X4 blends sporty handling with everyday practicality, featuring adaptive suspension, dynamic steering, and advanced driver assistance systems. The updated design and added technology make it a strong contender in the luxury Sports Activity Coupe segment.

2021 BMW X4 M Competition Review: Impractically Imperfect

It can be hard to take a “sporty” crossover seriously, but the 2021 BMW X4 M is not one of those times.

BMW took its time crafting M versions of the X3 and X4, focusing instead on their larger siblings first. Debuting for this generation, the M versions of these crossovers pack as much as 503 horsepower, and the necessary hardware to make the most of that power on the road.

Is this brawny little brute’s outright usability is compromised by its dramatic roofline? Yes. But then again, so are regular coupes, right? In the X4 M’s favor, it still packs four doors and a useful amount of storage space. If you’ve got a hankering for a Bavarian sports coupe but can’t give up the practicality inherent to SUVs, the X4 M does an unnervingly good job of blending the two disparate segments together.
