Mahatma Gandhi was unique. Through the force of his personality and teaching he could make the bitterest adversaries unite in a common cause. That is how India could succeed in the freedom struggle. Today as India stands disunited and fractious there is dire need for a new Mahatma Gandhi. Unfortunately that seems impossible because such unique personalities descend upon earth but rarely.
However I have a solution.
We can accomplish what Mahatma Gandhi did and more if we create a small group. No, not a Group of Ministers (GoM) heading which our new President has enormous experience. Unfortunately the many GoMs accomplished nothing. But the group I have in mind has already provided proof of how much it can accomplish.
What I suggest is that a group comprising the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the CBI, the Finance Minister and the most powerful industrialists unite to achieve a united India. Reliance can be confidently placed on such a group succeeding. Already a similar group accomplished wonders in the recent Presidential poll.
Just think. Miss Mayawati and Mr. Mulayam Singh united to vote for the same candidate. Mr. Prakash Karat and Miss Mamata Banerjee did likewise. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy ignored the discomfort of jail to do the same. Mr. Yeddyurappa defied his own party to do the same soon after he succeeded in getting bail. Even powerful tribal leaders justified the reliance reposed on them by ignoring narrow tribal loyalties to vote likewise. Why, even some followers of Mr. Narendra Modi could be persuaded by this group to vote likewise.
Could Mahatma Gandhi have accomplished such unity? Without disrespect to him, one is very doubtful. So why not create such a group on a permanent basis to make India united and strong?
