Research and Process
I began by making a mind map of the work “ignite” in order to find more obscure associations with the word. After this, I compiled typefaces, color palettes, and photographs that evoked the sensations listed in the map.
Based off the research, I designed thumbnails exploring compositions focused on the letters I, G and N. Several of these I developed further into practice studies, both physical and digital that explored different mediums and techniques.

Final Project
Taking feedback from my peers into consideration, I used what I learned from the practice studies to create three square compositions; one for each letter. The I was created digitally, while the G and N are physical, made of gouache and colored pencil respectively. These letterforms could be combined with work from other students to create variations on the word "ignite".
Example of constructed word. Featuring the work of Meredith Cluse and Will McKay.
Color
The color in these works play a large part in conveying the essence of "ignite". The analogous reds, yellows, and oranges of the I evoke the idea of flames. For the G, the vibrant, roughly blended colors show the passion and energy behind the word. The N contrasts saturated colors with smokey grays simulating the smoke and embers of a dying fire.
