Полиритмия — одновременное сочетание двух и более ритмических рисунков, не совпадающих по количеству временных долей в такте. Когда инструмент исполняет параллельно несколько отличающихся ритмических фигур, он создаёт полиритм, придающий музыке дополнительную выразительность.
Визуальной задачей было передать хаос, складывающийся в единство.
Design and Layout for the Book "Polyrhythm. Collected Articles"
Polyrhythm is the simultaneous use of two or more conflicting rhythmic patterns. When an instrument plays multiple distinct rhythmic figures in parallel, it creates a polyrhythm, adding depth and complexity to the music.
The core visual challenge was to represent chaos resolving into a unified whole.
Формат сборника — 205×260 мм с швейцарской обложкой, где единственным текстовым блоком является название, расположенное на корешке: лицевая и задняя стороны остаются чистыми, без лишнего визуального шума. Вся выходная информация размещается на внутренней стороне обложки.
Существует множество возможных полиритмических рисунков, но самым распространённым является полиритм 3:4. Именно на этом соотношении строится визуальное оформление издания.
The collection is presented in a 205×260 mm format with a Swiss binding. The spine features the title as the sole typographic element, while the front and back covers remain clean, free of any visual noise. All publishing details are located on the inside of the cover.
While numerous polyrhythmic patterns exist, the 3:4 ratio is the most common. This specific ratio serves as the foundational principle for the edition's entire visual design.
Блок состоит из семи тетрадей разного размера. Шмуцтитулы объединены паттерном, который образован из контрформ взятого за основу цифрового соотношения. В начале каждого раздела расположены содержание и акцидентный номер главы.
The book block is composed of seven distinct-sized notebooks. The half-title pages are unified by a pattern generated from the counterforms of the foundational typographic ratio. Each section begins with a table of contents and a stylized chapter number.
Всего используется семь форматов полос: от 82×125мм до 205х×260мм. Форматы контрастны друг другу, но мне было важно сохранить читабельность и единство, поэтому было принято решение использовать единую модульную систему, которая адаптируется под каждый формат.
Сетки при просмотре готовой верстки выглядят разнообразно, в этом помогает меняющийся масштаб, но всё объединено принципом 3/4. Четная и нечетная сторона добавляют динамику в верстку, сохраняя возможность спокойствия типографики. Так же каждая колонка имеет направляющую, которая отделает 3/4, по ней выстраивается дополнительный текст.
The layout employs a system of seven distinct page formats, ranging from 82×125 mm to the full 205×260 mm. While these formats are intentionally contrasting, maintaining readability and a cohesive identity was paramount. To achieve this, a unified modular grid was developed, which adapts to each specific format.
When viewing the final layout, the grids appear diverse—an effect achieved through a dynamic scaling system. However, they are all unified by the foundational 3:4 principle. The use of contrasting even and odd page layouts introduces visual rhythm, while allowing the typography itself to remain balanced and calm. Furthermore, each column includes a guide that demarcates a 3:4 area, used to align secondary text elements.
В книге используется шрифт Apophis Display и Apophis Text от студии шрифтового дизайна BoldItalic. Выразительная антиква, которая хорошо работает как в заголовках, так и в наборном тексте. Несмотря на разницу форматов, иерархия кеглей везде выдержана в одинаковых значениях и не меняется в зависимости от размера полосы, что помогает сохранить целостность сборника.
The book uses the Apophis typeface family, designed by the BoldItalic type foundry, which includes both Display and Text cuts. This expressive serif performs excellently for both headlines and body composition. Despite the variation in page formats, the typographic hierarchy is maintained with consistent point sizes across the entire book. This adherence to a fixed scale, regardless of the page size, is key to preserving the collection's visual unity.
Колонэлементы располагаются на маргинах. На правой полосе находятся статичные элементы: номер страницы в середине поля, для удобной навигации и продублированное название сборника. Колонтитулы левой полосы живут динамично и меняют свое расположение в зависимости от раздела.
The running heads and folios are positioned within the margins. On the recto (right-hand page), these elements are static: the page number is centered within the margin for easy navigation, accompanied by a repeated title of the collection. The running heads on the verso (left-hand page), however, are dynamic; their placement shifts according to the section, creating a deliberate visual rhythm.
Используются два типа изображений: первый – фотографии с эффектом линейного битмапа, который поддерживает патерн шмуцтитулов и графику обложки. Второй тип – фото обложек альбома, где цвет играет важную роль и по этой причине сохраняет свои изначальные характеристики.
The design incorporates two distinct types of imagery. The first comprises photographs treated with a linear bitmap effect. This treatment visually connects them to the half-title page pattern and the cover's graphics. The second type consists of album cover photographs, where color plays a critical role; for this reason, these images retain their original, full-color characteristics.
