The BMW M6 GT3 is one step closer to replacing the Z4 GT3 race car. Set to debut for the 2016 racing season, the M6 GT3 recently made its maiden test run at BMW's test track in Dingolfing, Germany.

The 2017 BMW M6 GT3 packs a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine under the hood that offers 585 hp. The V-8 is mated to a six-speed sequential racing transmission and has a top speed of 174 mph.

Artists Cao Fei and John Baldessari will create the 18th and 19th BMW art cars, respectively. Both vehicles will be based on the M6 GT3, and they might compete in a US race.

In fact, BMW boasts that the M6 GT3 is the most economic GT racer it’s ever built. For example, the running costs for the powertrain will be roughly 30 percent lower than that of the Z4 GT3.
