The day marks the anniversary of the first approved waffle iron patent in the U.S., which was issued to American inventor Cornelius Swarthout in 1869, the National Day Calendar reports.

The Waffle Iron opened in April and it’s not hard to find, but it’s on U.S. 72 instead of the more heavily traveled Poplar, so I’d not seen it.
