The new 2023 Toyota Prius is a whole lot of car for under $30,000. Even the most expensive AWD model starts at just over $35,000.

Toyota has not released those numbers yet. The plug-in hybrid version of the new Prius will use the same 2.0-liter engine, an upgrade from the previous PHEV "Prime" models.

Toyota turned me loose in my blacked-out Prius Prime XSE in the rolling hills of San Diego. I began the day in EV-only mode; under 45 miles an hour, it was plenty quick for city driving.

So for the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime XSE Premium, I say thumbs up, to much improved styling a much improved interior and great gas mileage. Thumbs down to tight row two seats.
