Empty spools from 3D printer filament are the kind of thing that begs to be repurposed, and one option is [3d-printy]’s vertical filament spool parts drawer design.
Now they’re back with Spool Tower 2: The Re-Spoolening. These are STL bundle packs that should contain all that’s needed to turn an empty filament spool into an art piece, minus of course the ...
Most folks with 3D printers have a few empty spools just sitting around. I know I did. A few weeks back, while finishing up a big project, I realized I needed a way to secure the power cord.

It just feeds, melts, and extrudes. Some printers, though, do have a sensor -- called a filament runout sensor or a filament break sensor -- that tells when a spool is empty or no filament is feeding.
All spools of filament start with raw plastic pellets, the most common being PLA (Polylactic Acid), a biopolymer made from plant materials such as corn, sugarcane or beets.
It then utilizes the existing 3D printer to create a customized filament spool, different sections of which are made out of the different polymers. That spool is printed as a flat horizontal spiral.
