Next, spread a 1-inch layer of sand along the entire path, before laying down your bricks in a herringbone pattern. Tap bricks evenly into the sand, and fill in the cracks between with sand too.

Bricks are also pretty affordable to buy if you can't find anything for free. For example, Lowe's sells really attractive Titan Florida 7.75 x 3.75-inch red clay bricks for just over a quarter each.
