The lac operon contains what is known as the CAP site, located upstream of the promoter along the DNA. The CAP site gets its name from a protein-the catabolite activator protein-that can bind there.

The operon is regulated by Lac repressor, the product of the lacI gene, which is transcribed from its own promoter (PI). The repressor inhibits transcription by binding to the lac operator (O).
