Laxus Dreyar is the grandson of the Fairy Tail guildmaster, Makarov Dreyar. He begins the series as a pompous jerk, touting his immeasurable power above many of his fellow guild members' heads.

While Makarov Dreyar - the seemingly all powerful master of the Fairy Tail mercenary guild - had been bested before, the first time was more a result of his opponent outsmarting him.
