Place the Brussels sprouts on a baking sheet. Drizzle with 3 tablespoons of the oil and then sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and all the mustard seed, if using.
In the Mustard Seed version, we don't start out in Russia in 1905. Instead we're in at a Hannukah party in New York in 1948 - after the Holocaust, and after the establishment of the state of Israel.
When ready to serve, toss with 1 tablespoon mustard seed and return to the oven for about 5 minutes. Remove and toss in 2 to 3 tablespoons mustard sufficient to coat the Brussels sprouts.
