Veteran Brazilian surfer Marcio Freire died on Thursday while practising tow-in surfing on the giant waves in Nazaré on the central coast of Portugal, the local maritime authority said.

He is credited with putting tiny Nazare, Portugal, just a few hours outside of Lisbon, on the map. In 2011, he surfed a wave face there determined to be 78-ft. high, a then-world record.

Every year, record-seeking surfers and spectators descend on the small Portuguese town of Nazaré for the "big wave" season, when water can surge up to 100 feet (30 meters) tall.
