Medina is one of 48 surfers competing as part of the 2024 Paris Olympics, but the surf action is happening some 10,000 miles away in Tahiti, at a monstrous wave called Teahupo’o.

The surf contest window starts on July 27 and is open through Aug. 5. The contest needs three-and-a-half to four days to run; officials will decide when they think conditions are best.

Teahupo’o, Vaast’s home village where the surf competition took place, set a record for the furthest competition from a host city in Olympic history and its selection was not without controversy.
