The Sussex Club was formed in 1903 and soon standardized the three main varieties: the multicolored Speckled, Red, and Light Sussex. Later the White, Silver, Buff, and Brown were recognized.

Speckled Sussex chickens are hefty birds, weighing about 8 pounds each, good for laying and eating. This spring, I brought the young reds home and put them in the chicken run with the blacks.

11-year-old Heidi Hood of Carnes presented her winning project on Speckled Sussex chickens to the board. She raised and studied these chicks as a part of the 4H Poultry Chain Project.
