Okay, I’ve never played “Final Fantasy VII” before, so at first, the movie made very little sense to me. Somehow, though, watching this “Complete Edition” seemed a lot less muddled and made better sense. Or maybe I’m just paying better attention now.
Whatever the case is, this film is pretty darn good. The story and characters may be a bit confusing for folks like me, who aren’t familiar with the original computer game. But the story / characters are quite good, and carry some interesting thematic content. Action scenes are plentiful and are really cool (even if you don’t understand what’s happening, the movie is still worthwhile for all of the action scenes). The plot has some slow parts; the really cool stuff happens towards the end. Animation quality and design is really excellent; some characters almost look photo-realistic, and the settings look really vivid and detailed. Voice acting is good for the most part (the English dubbing doesn’t always match the lip movements, though). Production design (sets, props, costumes, weapons, vehicles, creatures) is really excellent, original, and interesting. Music is awesome.
The disc has excellent quality. The video is really sharp and detailed (so much so that, in several scenes, I could see dust particles reflecting sunlight; how cool is that?). Some areas (like with thin lines or detailed textures) seem to have a digitalized or pixilated effect to them, so the video is not 100% smooth. Color and contrast seem good. Sound quality is good, although I thought that the movie’s music was rather subdued. The disc includes a few extras; a featurette, a whole anime episode of "On the Way to a Smile", a couple of story digest features, and a preview (not a demo) of the “Final Fantasy XIII” video game.

Though I was initially a little disappointed in the film (probably since I was still a bit biased towards “Omega Man” and was expecting more action and goofiness), “I Am Legend” has proven to be quite strong. Its story is interesting and compelling; the plot is tight and moves at a good pace. It includes some good action / special effects scenes (although the effects are a bit fake-looking). But it’s more of a drama, and at times, the drama really is emotionally invoking. Characters are great; acting and writing are excellent. The photography is very solid. Production design (sets, props, costumes) is excellent. Music is good.
The disc has perfect video/sound quality; very clean, sharp, and high-quality. Includes both the Theatrical cut and the alternative version of the movie with a different ending (I like them both). Includes some neat animated comics, and some making-of features.

Somewhat based on the book “I Am Legend,” this film is something of a cult sci-fi horror flick, with some slick action and some memorable scenes. It’s become rather dated and silly by today’s standards (especially with the outdated hairstyles, costumes, music, and everything), but if you enjoy other sci-fi films of the era (like “Soylent Green” or “Logan’s Run”), then this may interest you.
The story is not bad; the plot has some slow parts, but is mostly exciting. Characters are great; the main character is pretty well-developed. Writing and acting are decent. Photography is a bit antiquated, but still okay. Production design (sets, props, costumes) is interesting. Music is funky.
The disc has okay quality for the most part. Daytime scenes look very sharp and colorful; nighttime scenes have a lot of film scratches on it. There is some grain over the whole picture. And even though color is okay, contrast is pretty bad in some spots. Sound quality is average. Includes the same extras as the DVD.

This is not the original 1972 film (which is pretty darn awesome); this is a 2005 Hallmark miniseries, spanning four hours. It has the same plot, only instead of a giant tidal wave, the ship is turned over by a terrorist explosion. It gets a bit long, and it's pretty absurd in a lot of parts, but it does have some exciting parts and some thrilling drama. There are a lot of good stars (Steve Guttenberg (if you can call him a "good" star), Rutger Hauer, Adam Baldwin, Peter Weller, and probably some other folks). Then again, character development, acting, and writing are not really strikingly great either. Photography is pretty slick. Special effects look rather fake. Production design (sets, props, costumes) is okay. Music is bad.
I thought that this disc’s video quality was generally good; it is colorful and highly detailed. It is a fullscreen movie only. Sound quality is passable. Includes a number of extras (same as the DVD I believe).

Based on the old samurai movie "The Seven Samurai," this anime show takes the basic plot and characters and gives it a wonderful sci-fi fantasy twist. It’s probably a bit tame for anybody looking for serious blood-and-guts action, but “Samurai 7” still offers some decent action scenes (especially towards the middle of the series), a good group of strongly-developed characters, and a plot that’s probably even better developed than “The Seven Samurai” (since they go father to show an aftermath, and some continuing conflict and resolution; it’s pretty cool). The show has decent animation quality, with lots of detailed backgrounds, foregrounds, and cool-looking (albeit fake-looking) computer-generated effects. Production design (sets, props, costumes, character design, vehicles, robots) is excellent. Music is good.
The series has good quality as far as I can tell. Pencil lines are sharp; backgrounds and foregrounds have plenty of detail; color and contrast doesn’t look too bad to me. Sound quality is good. Includes just a few extras. Comes in a thin box with three standard BD cases inside.

Parodying some great Vietnam War films (like “Platoon” or “Apocalypse Now!”), this movie features lots of perverse violence and dialogue. I know this title is nothing to scream about, but I found it fun regardless. The story is clever, and the plot moves at a good pace. Only the ending ticked me off, first because it was predictable, and second because it just ended with a rather contrived twist. It made me wonder if they’d make a sequel, but I doubt it now. It’s still quite entertaining. There are quite a few great action/special effects scenes. The characters are not bad (and I even liked the romance between Nicolas Cage’s and Jessica Biel’s characters). Photography is really solid. The production design (sets, props, costumes) is decent (although one or two parts resemble other movies, like “A Clockwork Orange”). Music is good.

This first film in the duology (the second film being “Day Watch,” which I really love for some odd reason) is quite weird, to say the least. Although it is quite an original premise with lots of great fantasy and horror elements, the plot becomes really muddled and hard to follow. Combined with the crazy photography and lots of incredible action/special effects scenes, the movie overall is quite bizarre.
So here’s my typical breakdown: story is okay; plot is hard to follow; characters are okay; acting and writing are good; sets, props, costumes, creature designs, and everything else is phenomenal; action/special effects/visual style is great; photography is interesting; music is great.

Loosely based on PD James' novel "Children of Men," this movie takes the original premise (a world where everybody has become infertile) and takes it to its most extreme, most depressing, most unsettling conclusion. It is an apocalyptic vision that is so brutal and bitter that it highlights just how cruel and malicious the human race really is. The whole thing is a downward spiral, and I found it to be one of the most depressing movies ever made (second to "The Passion").
But it is not all doom and gloom; the ending does provide some hope. And the ending comes pretty fast, for the plotline moves at a brisk pace. There are a lot of incredible action scenes, many of which were shot with hardly any cuts; the choreography and logistics of each shot is impressive. Thus, the photography is really excellent as well. Special effects are used so effectively, I couldn't even tell what was an effect and what wasn't (the birth scene made me wonder "how did they do that?"). Production design (sets, props, costumes) is excellent. Music is good.

To say the least, this movie is impressive on all levels. The story is most worthwhile, for it touches upon an interesting piece of history, and portrays the plight of a nation's downfall most effectively and objectively. Some elements are incredibly insightful (such as the portrayal of Hitler as a character, or the extreme nationalist pride/fanatacism all his subordinates showed, and the insanity of the whole situation). At the same time, much of it appears historically accurate, even down to each characters' portrayals. All that being said, the story, plot, characters, acting, and writing are all way excellent. It's not all a drama either; there are also quite a few war scenes throughout, which are both exciting and invoking. The photography is good. Production design (sets, props, costumes) are great and appear accurate. Music is not bad.

Clint Eastwood seems to be pumping out award-winning dramas one after another these days, and although this one seems a bit long, it's still quite good. Based on a couple of real-life events, the story is good and thrilling, and moves at an acceptable pace. Characters are strong; acting and writing are top-notch (in fact, this is probably the best acting I've seen Angelina Jolie do so far!). Photography is slick. At first glance, this movie seemed quite long, boring, and uninteresting. But with subsequent viewings, and afterpaying closer attention, I found it to be pretty awesome. There's not much action, and what few shoot-out scenes the movie has are quite short. But, they are done pretty realistically, and the drama can be mesmerizing. The story, despite the slow pacing, is pretty decent. Characters have their own issues and nuances that make them good, but not terribly overwhelming. Acting and writing are okay. The photography is great. Production design (sets, props, costumes) is excellent; I swear that a lot of things in the movie look genuine. Music is okay (don't care for the end credits song much though).
The video quality is clean, colorful, and has some good detail to it, but also seems soft and subdued. Sound quality is not bad, but seems to have a lot of parts with low volume. Includes a few extras and a digital copy.

This film was initially described as "quintessential," along similar lines to 1982's "Scarface" or "The Goodfellas." Personally, I think "American Gangster" comes close, but seems to fall short in some way; I think it's because I didn't find the characters nearly as interesting as they are in the other films.
Regardless, the story is good (based on true events, I believe), and the plot moves along pretty swiftly (even if it is two and a half to three hours long). There are some violent action scenes, as well as a number of suspenseful scenes. Acting and writing are good. Photography is pretty good. Production design (props, costumes, sets) are good, and seem to reflect the era (the 70s) well. Music is good.
Video quality is good for the most part, but seems very soft (it sounds like that's the intended effect). It is still a good, clean picture. Sound quality is good. Includes all the same extras as the three-disc DVD (minus the digital copy). Includes both the theatrical and extended cuts of the movie.

First, the big negatives: this film is almost exactly like "Escape from New York," since they barricade a whole chunk of land, let its inhabitants roam wild, while a one-eyed bad-a** hero (or heroine) goes into the heart of it all and tries to get something out. The film also contains elements of "Mad Max" with the cool post-apocalypse car chase, and elements of "28 Days Later" with both the plague-ridden plot and the music. So altogether, "Doomsday" is a huge rip-off of many apocalyptic movies.
But it's still a fun ride, and would actually come reccomended if you enjoy any of the movies mentioned above (as well as titles like "Death Race"). If you can get over the rehashed story/characters/music and if you can stomach the violence/gore/cannibalism, you will be treated to a number of great action scenes. The production design (sets, props, costumes, cars, weapons, and other stuff) is great, detailed, and has a few original things (like the eyeball camera). Photography gets a little shaky, but is still pretty slick. Music is awesome (even if they did steal a part of the "28 Days Later" soundtrack. I swear, it's the same melody!).

This is probably the one and only dark, evil, twisted musical film I know of (granted, though, that I still haven't seen "Repo! The Genetic Opera" yet). Without the musical numbers, it probably would have come off as a disturbing, sick serial killer flick along similar lines to "From Hell." In a way, though, the music actually contrasts with the violence, making it even more startling.
All that being said, the story is decent, and the characters are great. They are well-acted and well-written. From start to finish (or rather, from finish to start), this movie turned out to be incredibly mesmerizing, stylish, and thought-provoking. At this point, I consider it one of the best drama/thriller/neo-noir movies ever made.
Despite the fact that the story is told in reverse, it's not too confusing at all; the plot moves at a good pace and makes a lot of sense, as long as you pay attention. The visual style and photography (which are excellent) plays a major role in the story's development (black-and-white scenes show what happened prior to the movie's events, while color scenes show the present, for example). The writing and acting are top-notch. Production design (props, costumes, sets) is excellent. Music is good.
The disc looks phenomenally clear, clean, and sharp to me; maybe a bit grainy, but I was pleased with the video quality. Sound is good. But I held onto it, partly to see if there is more, and partly because it had a cool cover).

This movie was quite a surprise; it does for guns what "Scarface" does for drugs. The two even have a similar story; they both portray characters who become prosperous on selling (and even obsessing) over these things. "Lord of War" is much more politically-charged, as it disturbingly portrays a weapons dealer manipulating governments and betraying loved ones to prosper. The consequences of his actions are shocking at times. This provocative story is excellently acquentuated by the photography, which is incredibly slick and stylish. The plot is good, and moves along as a good pace. Characters are excellent, well-written and well-acted. Production design is excellent; sets, props, costumes, and weapons (lots of weapons, including gold-plated AK-47s) are great. Music is good.

This is one rare remake that supercedes its original. The original "Italian Job" was entertaining to an extent, but is now quite dated and a little silly. This new one presents a different, better story with an excellent cast of characters. Their writing and acting are excellent; it is as witty as it is dramatic. There are some exciting scenes, especially towards the end with the car chase scene (not to mention, the heist as a whole is quite clever). Production design includes some good sets, props, costumes, and some nifty cars (Mini Coopers!). Photography is good. Music is awesome.

The hype over this movie is well-justified. Aside from some phenomenal action and special effects (some of which may be a bit too graphic for younger audiences), the movie has a good storyline and some very strong characters. Writing and acting is excellent all-around. Production design features some very slick props, costumes, sets, weapons, and vehicles. This has always been a favorite of mine, and is a great example of how a sequel can surpass its predecessor. Continuing the story of the first "Terminator," this film moves along at a nice pace and is loaded with great action scenes and some very original special effects. It has some witty comedy throughout, but it never detracts from the serious drama, the gripping action, or the thought-provoking themes of human nature. In the midst of all this, the movie also manages to have very strong characters (and it even gives strong characterization to the Terminator himself, convincingly humanizing him). And to this day, the T-1000 character is still the one that scares me the most (I had a nightmare once about him, I swear). Production design includes lots of great sets, props, costumes, vehicles, and weapons. Music is good.
This disc is watchable, but by no means the best. The video quality seems soft, with lots of grain and scenes with bad contrast. Sound quality is good, though. Unfortunately, there are no extras (and believe me, there are loads of extras to be found on former DVD releases). The newer SkyNet Edition is a better disc than this, due to better PQ and more extras.

The disc is an improvement over the former Blu-Ray release. The video quality is cleaner, colorful, and has good contrast. The only problem is that it seems a bit soft. Sound quality is good. It includes three versions of the film (one of which requires a special code to access; I'm sure you can find it somewhere online or on the disc itself). Includes some extras (some of which need to be watched while the movie is running), but none of it is the same as the 2-disc Ultimate Edition DVD or the 2-disc Extreme Edition DVD.

After nine seasons of shifting, turbulent storylines and characters, it's easy to forget the roots of this show. The first season is still the best in my opinion, offering a collection of very interesting and original stories with a fresher, younger cast of strong characters, each with interesting issues that are actually resolved or neglected in later seasons. Each episode has a strong, fresh, and vivid visual style, utilizing special effects, slick photography and editing, and even slow-motion photography to create cinematic appeal. Writing for each episode is very good, and often reveals some thought-provoking content (some of which is actually rooted in real life, such as the episode "Unfriendly Skies"). Production design features a lot of flashy props, costumes, and settings. And the music for the whole show is awesome.
The video quality on this show is the best I've seen for it so far. As old as this season is, it gets a bit grainy and fuzzy at some parts, but is still sharp, clear, clean, and vivid for the most part. Sound quality is good. Includes a number of extras, including new featurettes and an alternate pilot episode.

It's a simple story, but it is very well-made with a strong central character. Photography and visual effects are used very effectively, giving the whole film a unique look and style. Production design is clever, using some odd props the character uses as tools, while giving him an interesting setting. Music is not bad.
The video/sound quality seemed really good to me. The picture seems a bit soft, but for a movie as old as this, I was very pleased with it. It only has a few special features (really dissapointing, since the 2-disc DVD has more stuff on it. I held onto it still).

There never were any indicators that this would be a good film by any measures. As far as direct-to-video releases go, this is quite average at best. I believe that the film's photography is as good as (if not better than) the first film "Donnie Darko." There are a lot of slick special effects, which may actually be frivilous, but are cool to look at. There is some interesting dialogue. Production design seems good, with some interesting props, costumes, and settings. And there is some good music throughout.
Aside from all that, however, the movie's plot is weak, hard to follow, and seems to really rip-off the first film (especially since elements from the first film keep re-appearing without any substantial context). The characters are also rather uninteresting, and at times, it's hard to figure out who's who and what their roles are. In the end, the story comes off as uninteresting and dull, despite the visual flair. The whole thing is especially weak when compared to "Donnie Darko."
The disc has excellent video quality; I could not see any problems with it, and it seems very sharp. The sound quality is good, but some parts seem overbearingly louder than the rest of the movie (poor balance). There are a few extras included.

Like other horror films I've blind-purchased, I expected this movie to be total crud. In the end, it turned out to have a decent story with good, well-acted characters, and some excellent photography. There is a lot of blood and guts (probably more than most movies, but still not as much or as brutal as others, like "Seed" or "Dead Alive"). Production design includes some of the creepiest demonic creatures ever made, as well as some great (albiet fake-looking) creature and make-up effects, and props. Music is good.
The disc has smashing video and sound quality; it looked very clear, sharp, and detailed. Some scenes may look a bit dated, but I was still pleased with it overall. It includes a bunch of great extras.

Well, this movie isn't anything particuarly exceptional, but it makes for some brainless fun. The action, fighting, and special effects are top-notch. The story is rather hoaky, the characters are underdeveloped. But, the production design is great (sets and costumes are very detailed, and appear to fit the setting well), and the photography is quite slick. Also, the movie seems littered with homages to other kung-fu movies.
The disc is perfect; video and sound quality are exceptionally sharp, clean, and vivid. There are loads of extras, and a digital copy.

When I first saw this movie, it just blew me away. For its time, the action and special effects were phenomenal, the production design was very original (albiet a little similar to movies like "Blade Runner" or "Judge Dredd"), the dialogue was hip and witty, the visual style was great, and the music is great. These days, I can't help but to think that this movie is pretty goofy. But, it is still wildly entertaining, and I consider it a classic.
The disc has great video and sound quality; you can really see the details of the digital effects and hear the unique sounds clearly. The only extra is a trivia track (really dissapointing since there was a 2-disc DVD that had about 2 hours of features; I kept it with this Blu-Ray disc).

As far as martial arts films go, I think this one has a decent enough story, some good fights, and a very slick production design. I don't think I'd call it the best; it feels much more like a Bond film, with the espionage plot, the classic villians with their gadgets, and the overall style and tone of the film. It's fun, but I guess I like newer films better.
I think most folks like this film the best because of Bruce Lee's part. It also does have a tight plot with lots of action.
The video quality is good; a bit grainy and dated, but still sharp and colorful. Sound quality is not bad. Includes a bunch of extras (I think the same extras from the 2-disc DVD).

Ah, what bliss to viddy this old zammechat picture, seeing the red red kroovy and watching young ptitsas doing the old in-out-in-out. This raskazz is real horrowshow, quite unlike any other gloopy pictures; like milk plus, it can sharpen you up for a bit of the old ultraviolence.
In other words, this film is extraordinary. The most notable thing about it will be the provocative content; sex, violence, brutality, sadism, drug use, and possibly other issues are unabashedly on display here. Yet these elements accentuate the story (which is quite interesting) and the characters (which are great) to relay a message about human nature and society. It's not quite as great as the novel (which was missing a chapter at the time this movie was made; I think the book's alternate ending was better), but still a close adaptation, even down to the weird language they all used (as show in the first paragraph). The movie also has some phenomenal photography, including some really vivid imagery. The production design is really far-out (almost ridiculous when you see people with purple hair, or art work with blatant sexual imagery all over the place). And the music plays an interesting part of the story.
The video quality is good, clean, sharp, and colorful. The sound quality is not bad (it was never great for this film anyway). It includes all the same extras as the 2-disc DVD.

This movie is a classic, without a doubt. It features a clever, original story with strong characters, excellent writing and acting, and strong Cold War themes. Production design features some very slick UFO and robot designs (albiet they are dated). Special effects are great, and still hold up to this day. Photography is excellent. I admit that the second half of the movie went a little downhill, with a predictable, contrived ending. I also really didn't like the kid's character much; way too annoying, and his actions didn't make much sense. Other than that, though, I really didn't think this was such a terrible movie. The story is good, and expands upon the original in a few good ways (they gave Klaatu more omnipotent powers, showed more of humanity's weaknesses, and Gort was awesome). The action and special effects are awesome. Photography is good. Production design is excellent. Acting/writing are not bad. There are some strong environmentalist themes throughout. Music is not bad.

Unsettling, and downright freaky without being overly graphic (at least by today's standards), this film is quite the horror classic. It manages to achieve palpable tension and creepiness through the cameramanship and the sets, props, and costumes. The acting is a bit over-the-top, but still more freaky than it is absurd. Some would say that the ending is dumb, since the main character spends her time running around screaming, but I think it's not so bad. Altogether, it's one of the better disturbing horror movies I know of.
Video quality is...well...crummy. There are scratches and grain all over the place. BUT, I think it's all supposed to be there, given the gritty, disturbing nature of the film. It is still somewhat sharp. The sound quality is good. Includes the same extras as the 2-disc DVD.

This show is quite a blast; there is enough action and special effects to outdo most other shows being broadcasted. The stories are all interesting, and hardly ever dull. The characters are fitting; acting and writing are not bad. Photgraphy is good (even though the first episode seemed a bit shaky/jittery, but they stopped doing that). Production design so far matches that of the original "Terminator" movies; the show fits pretty well between "T2" and the events that are supposed to happen later (I guess in "Terminator: Salvation." But as I recall, they made the show while discounting the events of "T3"). Music is good.
The video quality is excellent, practically flawless, and the sound quality is great. Includes a few good bonus features, as well as an uncut version of one of the episodes.

Following up on the events of "Casino Royale," this film further chronicles the growth of James Bond's character, while showing his continuing quest for revenge. If the close connection to the first film doesn't throw you off, then the rest of the story in this film may; initially, I found it rather muddled. At first, I would have given this movie a 3.5 out of 5, but after subsequent viewings, I grew to appreciate the plot, even if it doesn't make total sense.
The plot does move along nicely, featuring many smashing action scenes. The photography gets really shaky and chaotic during these scenes, but it's manageable. The filming in the rest of the movie is great. Production design features many cool vehicles, great costumes, and great sets/locations. Music is great.

Although I enjoy nearly every Bond film, I like this one the best. It takes after the original novel better than any other adaptation (granted that the 60s and 50s versions were terrible adaptations anyway), and portrays very strong characterization, showing Bond's evolution from a reckless emotionally-driven novice into a colder, hardened spy. Thus, the acting and writing are excellent.
Above all, the plot is smashing. It's almost epic, not only because it's nearly 2 and a half hours long, but also because it has some very intense action scenes and special effects. There's enough excitement to outdo all other Bond films.
Plus, the photography is good, production design is good (without resorting to too many silly gadgets), and the music is great.
The disc has perfect video and sound quality. There are several hours of extra features included. Overall, this is probably one of the best Blu-Rays you can get.

Ah, this has always been a favorite of mine. It's zany, cartoonish, but never lame or childish. For the most part, it's an imaginative, hilarious, somewhat wild comedy with some morbid overtones. On top of all that, the production design is great; there are loads of bizzare sets, creatures, and nifty special effects. The acting, writing, characters, and story are all great. And the music is classic.
The disc is decent; the video quality is not 100% perfect, but still offers better sharpness than the DVD. The color and contrast is good. The sound quality is good. The disc also includes a commentary, and couple of episodes from the cartoon show (which look a bit gaudy in standard definition. It's also strange that they'd include those and very little of anything pertaining to the movie itself, but oh well). The most worthwhile extra is a CD with six songs from the soundtrack. And as if that's not enough, the movie also has a music-only track.
