‘Ferrari’ trailer: Adam Driver is in it to win in Michael Mann’s first film since 2015 [Watch]

One day before its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, NEON has started the promotional engine for Michael Mann’s “Ferrari.” The drama, the first feature Mann has directed since “Blackhat” in 2015, stars Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, the Italian racer and founder of the famed car brand.

Along with the first trailer for the film (see it below), NEON also released the official synopsis:

It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino a year earlier. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his son Piero with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers’ passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.

In addition to Driver, the film stars Penelope Cruz as Laura and Shailene Woodley as Lina. “Ferrari” is a project Mann has wanted to make for decades. In writing about the project for a recent cover Variety story on Mann, Stephen Rodrick noted “‘Ferrari’ is best understood as an old-school melodrama, a description that Mann happily embraces.”

“Everything he’s been collides with what he might become, and the company has gone bust,” Mann said in an interview with Rodrick. “His wife finds out about the other woman. It’s a spectacularly operatic melodrama in real life.”

NEON will debut “Ferrari” in December. After its bow at the Venice Film Festival, the film will also screen as the closing night feature at the New York Film Festival.

“Michael Mann has made many remarkable movies but perhaps never one as simultaneously thrilling and moving as ‘Ferrari,’” New York Film Festival artistic director Dennis Lim said previously. “Not just a feat of virtuosity, this is a grand and striking evolution of his career themes and his most deeply personal work. We are honored to welcome him to the festival for what I’m sure will be a Closing Night for the ages.”
