Easy Crochet Sun Bookmark

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain

HDC – half double crochet

Sl St – slip stitch

St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)

My bookmark is about 11” (28 cm) long (but you can make your bookmark of any length you like)

Yarn:

Cotton light-weight #3 yarn or cotton thread size #3 (UK yarn type – DK or 4 ply). I used Premier Afternoon Cotton, light-weight # 3 yarn, 100% cotton

Hook and other materials:

• US size (C-2) 2.75 mm crochet hook
• US size (G-6) 4 mm crochet hook
• Stitch marker
• Tapestry needle to weave in ends
• Googly eyes (diameter 6 mm)
• Hot glue gun

Note: The sun is worked in continuous rounds. Use stitch marker to mark first stitch of the rounds.

With crochet hook US size (C-2) 2.75 mm, make magic ring;

Round 1. Ch 1, 8 SC in magic ring. Total – 8 SC.

Round 2. 2 SC in each St around. Total – 16 SC.

Round 3. Sl St in next St,  [Ch 4, Sl St in 2^nd Ch from hook, SC in next, HDC in next,  skip 1 St of previous Round,  Sl St in next St] 8 times. Finish last point with Sl St into stitch where first Sl St of this round was made. Do not cut yarn off.

Ch 50 – 70 (or as you desire). Cut the yarn, leaving the tail about 2” (5 cm) long. Yarn over, draw the tail through the loop.

Tassel

Make the tassel in the same way as you would make fringe for a scarf. Do not make it bulky. Cut 2 pieces of yarn approximately 4” (10 cm) long. Insert crochet hook 4 mm through the last chain. Grab the middle of the yarn strands with the hook and bring it through the chain, then grab the entire bunch of free ends (including the ending tail), draw them through the loop and tighten. Trim tassel ends evenly.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Block your bookmark as necessary. You can leave the bookmark as is, or use a hot glue gun to attach small googly eyes.
