April Mini challenge
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
This is an optional mini challenge for our UNO players.
◈ Books with a read date between April 15 - April 30 count. (countdown to the start of the mini challenge is here)
◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1)
◈ As a team, you will have a mixture of tasks to complete. These include spell-it-outs, cover items, words in text, and words in title. All of the tasks you need to complete are on your team spreadsheet
How to Choose your own adventure
As you are out on a walk, a pedestrian is hit by a car that then drives away! :o
Do you...
A) Stick around to see if you can help
B) You are too engrossed in your book while walking through the park to notice anything amiss until you hear shouts.
…..
First your team will decide if you are going down stream A or stream B. From there you are given two choices at each point. We have shown these choices on this image: (Click on the image to make it larger)
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW THE STREAM CORRECTLY We have given lots of prompts in the spreadsheet and also have a sheet that shows the different combinations. NOT FOLLOWING CORRECTLY WILL RESULT IN NOT RECEIVING POINTS FOR THE TASKS INCORRECTLY COMPLETED.
◈ Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books for what you are claiming for your UNO hands
◈ The usual book length rules apply
◈ Team spreadsheets will be updated with a mini challenge tab so that you can track your books and claim your points
◈ Each task completed will give you 10 points. Once your stream is complete, you can also complete 10 duplicate tasks for 20 points each.
◈ You can read for your tasks and bonus tasks concurrently, but the bonus points won't be given until your stream is completed.
◈ If you read concurrently, but don't complete a branch of your stream, you won't get points for later parts. For example, if you choose A - A1 -A1a - A1aa ; and you read books for A1aa, but don't complete A1a.... you won't get those points for A1aa
Spell-it-out rules
For this mini-challenge, you are using the same rules that apply for UNO. So a letter needs to be the first letter in the book title, author first name or surname, character name or nickname, or setting. Articles (a/an/the) can be ignored in the book titles. For this spell-it-out, you can also use the first letter in the series name.

I'm Annika and one of your co-captains for this round. I'm from the currently cold and dark Sweden (summer and sun can't come fast enough) and am a confirmed bookworm from way back when.
My go to genres are m/m, romance and mysteries and any combination of them all. I'm also a challenge addict since my first uno game some five years back.
Hi! I'm Stacie, I live right outside of Washington DC. This is my second uno challenge. I read mostly romance in various forms.
Hi everyone!
I'm Ashleigh, your captain for this round of UNO. This is my 4th year playing UNO and heaven only knows how many challenges I've taken part in all around Goodreads since my first one.
I read a bit of everything, but mainly YA, Fantasy and Mystery Thrillers.
Looking forward to get to know everyone!

Also, I see some of the other teams are setting up a Books Read thread. Is that something you think we should have? Let me know your thoughts :)

Personally I feel like you miss out on a lot of good book discussion when you have a separate thread for it. Also this challenge is laid back so it will still be very manageble to have it all in one place. But I'll go with what the majority wants. :)

Hello!!! I’m Charly and this is my second year doing the uno challenge. I’m very excited about it. I had a lot of fun last year and read some amazing books. I love to read YA, murder mystery, sci fi or fantasy and at times some love stories. I’m good with doing one thread. It’s easier to follow. Can’t wait to see what we read this year!
Also, I've made a copy of the tracking spreadsheet template if anyone wants to start planning out their books for the start of the month. Here's the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

You will need to open it up for editing if you want everyone to add to it :)

Hi! I’m Tawni, and I’m in Vienna, Austria. This is my first year participating in the challenge and I’m soo excited but will definitely need to study up on the rules and how it all works. Please bear with me!
I read a it of everything but am most often drawn to historical fiction and classic literature.

Hi Tawni welcome to Veronica Mars!
The challenge isn't as difficult as it might seem, and we are always here to help you out with any questions you might have :)

How do you all generally choose your books? A Google search for books that will fit the requirements? I have a Want to Read shelf, of course… do you just scan your Want to Read shelves to find matches for the challenge? Sorry if that seems like a stupid question but there are just so many choices and I don’t know where to begin!
Honestly - I read the books I feel like, that are on my reading schedule or on my TBR. They always fit something. I do tend to keep an eye out for the more difficult letters; I, E, V & N - or if another team member has read the book before.
For the colour cards I might do a bit of hunting as they are more specific and more diffidult to find.
There are no stupid questions, we've all been new at this at some point - fresh blood is always appreciated ;)

Hi, I’m May! This is also my first uno challenge, but I promise to try my best. I read a little of everything, but my favourites tend to be magical realism, as well as literary fiction and a little YA.

Hi everyone! I’m Courtney from NJ and this is my first UNO challenge. So excited to get to know all of you and to read with you. Also, since I’m also a MARShmallow, I’m beyond thrilled!!!
Hi all! I’m Kerri I was just added, I’m so excited to join. This is my first time doing Uno, actually my first organized challenge at all.
Uno is the perfect challenge to start with. It's easy and laid back.
Though fair warning, it's been called a gateway challenge and you may become a challenge addict just like the rest of us ;)

Question; have you guys read or watched the Veronica Mars series, or do I have complany in the clueless corner? Well - semi Clueless - I have heard of both before this challenge, but not much more than that. ;)

I'm in the same boat Annika. I'm aware of the books/series but I haven't read or watched either. I'm thinking of seeking out one of the books from my library or Scribd and reading it for this challenge though.

I know the feeling! I've already got about 15 books I want to get to in February and I'm still looking for more to squeeze in haha.

I'm most looking forward to Verity and Spinning Silver as I've heard nothing but good things about both of these books.
Have you got any books planned? Or anyone else on the team got any planned? What are you looking forward to reading next month?

I super recommend trying out the show, if you have the time. The writing is really clever and the father/daughter relationship between Veronica and her dad is so good. I think the coolest thing about it, though, is that it manages to wrap up a season-long mystery and then move into the next season with just as much interest, rather than just fizzling out without the original central conflict.
