I was completely swept away with Nancy’s latest book and even more excited about this intriguing new book series!!!
This book is the perfect, charming start to the new, exciting book series trilogy from Nancy Fraser!! This book series follows the McAlister family, a post-Civil War family, that is more than familiar with the entities of a good bet – whether they are gambling on their work, love, life, family, or chance – it seems there is more than luck at play with this enchanting family! This first book follows the story of Matthew “Matt” McAlister, who saves a young woman, Kathryn “Kate” Lowell, from a very scary drowning and becomes quickly intrigued and smitten with her. Kate, who finds herself transported from the 21st century all the way back to the post-Civil War era, is not quite as easily taken, as this man is technically no stranger, a man she has had strong opinions, grudges, and contempt for. Her dislike and disdain bring up strong emotions at a vulnerable time for her. But when the stars align and these two see each other in a new light, can these two put the past behind them and make a go at a fresh, new start? Or is there too much history, memories, and hurt that can’t be overlooked? Or will Kate decide to leave the past behind for good and return back to her former life? Nancy’s writing and storytelling skills continue to impress me and only reaffirm why I enjoy her books so much!! I know when I read one of her books, it won’t just be for a few chapters… Before I know it, that idea to just read a few pages quickly turns into me still awake at sunrise finishing the entire book LOL!!! Of course, no regrets, sleep can be overrated when it comes to finding myself daydreaming off into the story line and getting immersed into these catchy, entertaining, and compelling stories!!!
Another enjoyable takeaway was the characters development and story arc. Nancy often creates characters that at first might seem worlds away – or in this case from centuries ago – but I am still able to easily connect with them and find common ground among their strongly cultivated characteristics!! I also enjoyed the fun, silly, entertaining witty banter between Kate and Matt. These two played well off of each other as the passion, content, and stubbornness felt fully emotionally charged. In addition, this book included a very solid supporting cast that I look forward to spending more time with over the course of this new book series.
This book is book one of the Love’s a Gamble Book Series. The author has announced that this new series will feature three books in total, with the remaining two expected to be released later this year. Book Two, “His Marriage Gamble,” is set to release on Amazon on February 16th, 2021. Book Three, “The Engagement Gamble,” is set to release on Amazon on March 16th, 2021. All three books are listed to follow the mesmerizing, powerful McAlister family.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it! I think all historical romance readers and post-Civil War fans will like this book too! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

This is my first book by this author. I enjoy time travel books and this one was quite engaging! It took a quick turn towards an intimate relationship that I honestly wasn’t expecting quite so soon in the story. Beyond that it was a good quick read.
