Regarding how interrelated individual books are in Romance series, this series follows more of a flow than a lot of them. Lydia, for example, the owner of the yarn store, is a major character in 3 of the first four books (far as I've gone). Hers and others characters appear frequently and some of them develop a little more as each book in the series progresses. Put simply, it makes more sense in order.

Also, later books will spoil some minor surprises of earlier books, some more minor than others. There is one in particular in the first book that loses it's impact if you see the results as they exist in later books.

Individually, any book can stand alone because the others fills in necessary details and each story is complete.

If possible, read book 1 first (The Shop on Blossom Street) and you will get a flavor for the series. Book 3, Susannah's Garden is unusual in the series in that it completely stands alone and there are few spoilers when one or two of the characters show up in later books. Therefore it would be another good place to start if you don't have book 1.(less)
