It's Christmastime in Grizzly Falls, which means it's time for someone to start killing women in cold and creative ways! This time it's Selena Alvarez in the crosshairs, which is a surprise to some given her quiet and controlled personality and life style. But Jackson has hinted all along that there was more to Selena's story than we were being told, and in this novel we learn it all. There were some surprising twists to this book, a big one being that Alvarez is no longer crushing over Captain Grayson. That's a new development that seems to have happened off-screen, but it's also sort of refreshing, and I found her old/new love, Dylan O'Keefe, way more interesting. My only complaint has to do with the series' recurring issues that Jackson continues to leave unresolved, most notably Regan Pescoli's (Alvarez's partner) seeming reluctance to commit to a relationship with Nate Santana. She continues to use her kids as an excuse, but that really doesn't wash anymore. And then there's the fact that Grizzly Falls still has anyone living there, given the rather high murder rate and the horrible winters! One would think people might start moving away (after the roads clear, of course.) LOL

I enjoy Jackson's storytelling, and I've grown attached to the citizens of Grizzly Falls. And if Pescoli wants my advice, she'll move in with the patient and ever-so-hunky Nate Santana, who, let's not forget, saved her life a while back!

As I was reading this book, it struck me as Laura Griffin light. It's a good book, don't get me wrong. It has all of Griffin's terrific character building, a lovely romance, and an unexpected twist. But it doesn't get into the depths of the investigation the way Griffin usually does. There's only one reference to the Delphi Center, and that's a profiler who appears briefly, although significantly. This is mostly a romance, since we know the threat early on. A killer is out to exact revenge on the prosecutors, the judge, and pretty much anyone else he thinks contributed to his conviction in a series of murders. Brynn Holloran is a lawyer who was part of the prosecution. Her boss hires a top security firm to provide bodyguards for her legal team who are in the middle of an important trial, and so can't simply go into hiding. I didn't like Brynn much. She's almost completely self-absorbed. Although as the book goes on, we understand her more and she becomes somewhat more likable. Her lead bodyguard, on the other hand, was a great character. He's a gorgeous hunk of man named Erik Morgan. He comes across as a by-the-book, nothing-rattles-him, kind of guy, which is why I was a little disappointed when he almost immediately breaks one of his own cardinal rules by getting involved with his client, Brynn. The two of them fall in lust really fast and act on it. It seemed out of character for Erik. But that doesn't take away from the overall story. This is still a suspenseful and very good read. Griffin's writing is always excellent. If you enjoy action/suspense romance, you'll definitely want to check out all her books, many of which are in the Favorites folder on my Kindle. Her next book is always on my "buy" list.

This is a contemporary action/suspense romance from J.R. Ward, who's better known for her paranormal work, including the terrific Black Dagger Brotherhood series (especially the early books.) The story centers around the fire department of a small fictional town near Boston. The heroine, Anne Ashburn, suffers a tragic loss that changes the trajectory of her entire life, but which also puts her in the path of some very bad people. The love of her life, firefighter Danny McGuire, meanwhile, is drowning in guilt over what happened to Anne, and ruining his own life in the process. The book is partly a story of how these two finally get together, and I have to warn you that being in their heads for the first part of the book is not pleasant. They're prickly and defensive, and, in Danny's case, self-destructive. But, of course, this is a romance, so we get to watch them finally get together, despite their complicated past and the lies of some of the people around them. But the romance is only part of the story. A larger part is Anne investigating a very powerful builder in a series of warehouse arsons, which puts her in danger. She is a strong, capable woman, who doesn't mind pissing off the powerful and isn't easily intimidated. Danny is a charming and beautiful man who's lost a lot of important people in his life to tragedy and is terrified that he'll lose Anne, too. This was a good story, a little slow to start, but once you get into it, you'll want to stay up late and finish it. Ward has a tendency to throw in some of her BDB style "gangsta" language, which is rather jarring, and can throw you out of the story as you try to figure out what it means. But most of the story flows well and is a good read.

4.5 stars Charles and Anna Cornick are my favorite couple of the Mercy Thompson World series. I've never had any trouble understanding their attraction or their love for each other. They make sense. This book was exciting and fast-paced, and gave the reader a fascinating look at the inner workings of Bran's pack of troubled wolves. Surprisingly, Briggs also humanizes Leah (Bran's mate, whom he chose, in the aftermath of his grief over the death of Charles's mother, because she was acceptable to his wolf, and because he would never love her. We still don't like Leah much, but we understand her better.

ADDENDUM: I missed Charles and Anna after reading this book, so I went back and read the novella in On the Prowl, which introduced them to us and each other. And then I also read Cry Wolf, which was their first full-length book. And in Cry Wolf, we learn why Bran chose Leah from HIS point of view, rather than Charles's. I had forgotten that. I love Julie James and she doesn't disappoint. We met FBI Special Agent Vaughn Roberts in Love Irresistibly, but I have a whole new appreciation for him after this book. Two of the most neurotic people you'd ever want (or not want) to meet, get together and have incredibly hot sex!! The sex was hot, hot, hot. It's worth reading this book just to see a master erotic writer at work. The sparks between Gideon and Eva are instant and electric, and while in real life, individuals as damaged as they are might be better off with someone more stable, this isn't real life, it's fiction. And in fiction all things are possible, especially if the writer knows what she's doing. Sylvia Day makes it work. I might not want to spend an evening with this couple, but I sure envy their sex life. :)

Virgil Flowers is much more laid back than his mentor and friend Lucas Davenport, but he's very engaging, and watching him solve crimes is never disappointing. With Virgil's stories, the reader always knows from the very beginning who committed the crime, and while the villain in Deep Freeze is pathetic, his crimes make for a very good story.

4 stars When two young sisters disappear from a mall parking lot, the family hires bounty hunter Alice Vega who has a reputation for finding missing kids and bringing the home. This is a deeply riveting story, terrifying in its realism. It could have come from today's headlines. Alice Vega was well drawn, with a vaguely hinted-at motivation from what seems to be a dark past. Former cop and current private investigator Max Caplan (Cap) is brought into the investigation by Alice to help out with the locals. Cap is more lightly drawn than Alice, although what we learn paints him as a deeply sympathetic and likable character. I would have liked to know more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good crime thriller, and I'll definitely be looking for Luna's next book.
