it was amazing

"We fight while we're still here, Salama, because this is our country. This is the land of your father, and his father before him. Your history is embedded in this soil. No country in the world will love you as yours does."

OMG! My first best read of 2025. My heart broke again and again while I continued reading this book until the end. I read it at my office one day, and I'm fighting the urge to keep my tears at bay so the others won't look at me weird.

As Long As the Lemon Trees Grow is about Salama, a Syrian, who had to endure the horrors of her country and her life falling apart from the revolution. While surviving the chaos around her, she also had to endure the chaos created by her own mind, due to her witnessing death and pain day by day by working at the hospital in her town. She met with a boy, Kenan, who helped her through all the chaos she had to endure and who, also wished for a freedom of their country one day.

This book basically taught me all I need to know about Syria's revolution movement and what actually happens there. The author was right because there's people like me out there, who don't know what exactly happening in Syria in full context at first. This book really, really helped me a lot in understanding that. I can't fathom the horrors the Syrian people have to deal with daily, on their own homeland. I feel their pain, throughout this book.

I don't want to spoil much but everyone, please, please, go read this book! I pray that every Syrians get to finally go home now after all this years of torture (I read the news last year, alhamdulillah, I hope and pray everything is going and will be going a lot better in Syria now). I pray that they can finally touch the soil of their homeland and plant those lemon trees again.

PS: To the author, if you're reading this review of mine, I want to know that I purple you, and I purple your book too, so much! Thank you for writing this. Borahae 💜
