This book wins the Goofy Award™ for a novel which is both absurdly unserious and yet deeply moving.
There’s a hostage situation… except it’s not as simple as that. An assortment of characters are held captive in an apartment, representing a microcosm of society with a mix of ages / professions / orientations / dilemmas. On paper, most of them have nothing in common, but as the saga unfolds they begin to bond over the things that make them different, and the things that make them the same. They find ways to build bridges (pun intended if you've read the book) with one another in endearing, heart-warming ways.
The overall impact is powerful: it's a lesson in empathy, recognising that each person is living a complex interior life which takes time to understand beyond our first impressions. I think this book would be great for getting you out of a reading slump.
I will say that sometimes Backman's humour verged on the cheesy side and the storytelling became a tad silly in its farfetchedness, but you can choose to embrace it and enjoy the touching moments instead.

I wonder how much of the humor didn't translate into English well? I've run into that with a couple or translated novels. I haven't read this one yet, but just a thought
I'm so happy you read it and liked it :D This is one of my favourite books ever, I love Backman's writing, so emotional and empatethic. So down-to-earth but yet philosophical at times. Love it
This review covers every bit I’d wanted to express about Anxious People, an oddly quirky and surprisingly profound read that captured my heart. Great review!
Being a Swede, his humor is akin to the Brit/Monty Python style, which I have always gravitated toward.. exaggeration, oddball characters doing the unexpected, its fun to say the least. If you enjoy this type of humor, I urge you to read "The Echo Chamber" by John Boyne which is equally nutty and fun
P.S. You might also enjoy "Insane City" by Dave Barry since its locker room/romping type of humor and funny as hell!
I picked this book up because of your review and the suggestion that it might get me out of a reading slump and it did just that. Thank you for the wonderful review Jack!
Yeah the story definitely became far fetched along the way but it's definitely a great book for the fact that's it's centered on a theme that's meant to envoke empathy from the reader and the characters within the book.. first book I have read by the author, and I'm just impressed by the unique style of writing that's so unserious yet touches serious themes
