5 heart-wrenching stars to this tale
This book made me face the harsh realities of WWII concentration camps with glimmers of hope. I had forgotten that this one is based on a true story. I hadn't really thought about the fact that Jewish prisoners had to do the tattoos for all the incoming prisoners. This job elevated the prisoner to some "hands-off" treatment so Lale, our main narrator, gets extra food rations and better sleeping conditions. He is still reminded that he's a prisoner there.
This story has a beautiful love story between two prisoners Lale and Gita and I rooted for them throughout the whole story, knowing it could end badly for both of them.
This is a WWII historical story that I recommend for everyone, definitely worth a read.

Wonderful review, DeAnn. Prisoners had to do horrific things in the camps, things they would never agreed to do if they had a choice. 🙁
