Local Woman Missing

Local Woman Missing starts with a good hook that creates tension and suspense and increases with each chapter. I was fully invested in the story and had many questions I needed the answers to. I flew through it quite fast.
Mary Kubica takes the "woman and child gone missing" trope and weaves in a fresh and exciting take on it. I had no idea where the story was going, and that at first added some excitement to the story trying to figure out where it was going. However I did start to lose a bit of patience with that and wished the story was better layered to pick up some clues. There are plenty of "shocking twists" that are not convincing. Often when I find some twists hard to buy into it doesn't bother me; however, when I can't buy into the characters' motivations, the story misses the mark for me. Unfortunately, I couldn't buy into the motivation here with a character. While I thought this was an intriguing and unique read, that final reveal was too absurd or layered enough to be convincing or entertaining.

I received a copy from the publisher through Edelweiss.

Thank you for your honest review of this book, Brenda. Your review was explicit and appreciated. I hope your next read is more satisfying.
I’m so sorry Brenda that motivations were not clear and it was a bit OOT. I’m nervous now as this is on my list too. Thanks for your excellent review. 💗

I felt the same way too. I couldn’t put the book down and I finished it quickly but the ending left me cold
Heidi, It’s so disappointing when that happens!! It is nice to see that a few people thoughts the same though!!
I appreciate your honesty, Brenda. I will keep in mind what you said about the ending -- I'm reading it next. :)
Sorry it didn't deliver Brenda, I guess we appreciate the great one's even more, when we meet an average story. I hope the next makes it to all 5 shiny ones.

I hope it works out better for you Melissa! I am again in the minority when it comes to this one! LOL I think it will help to know not to expect a realistic ending!!

Fantastic review, Brenda! You make me glad that my request for this book has been pending for months, lol!
Thank you, Meredith! Lol. It’s funny how that works out to be a good thing. So many times I have been glad or wished I had not been approved because they are still seating in my unread shelve. Lol.
Thank you, Farrah! I think I am more in the minority here and I often read a different book than most people do! Lol. I hope it’s a good one for you!!
Excellent review, Brenda! While I liked this a bit more than you, I completely agree about that character's motivation. MK just didn't stick the landing here.
Thank you, Regina! It’s disappointing that she didn’t layered that better to see more into the characters motivations.
SPOILER ALERT. Brenda I agree w your comments. I did like the book, but an obvious flaw to me is how I’m thinking an autopsy of a body would show this person did not die by suicide (head trauma, knife wound) 🤔
SPOILER ALERT! I had a a problem with Shelbys death. Wouldn’t the autopsy reveal that she died from being hit by a car?! In addition was the issue with Charlotte ever resolved? Why was Leo so scared of going there? Was if only because of the boy bullying him?
It was hard to buy into that because they would of been able to tell the cause of death. I think there was a few things not resolved or we were suppose to just go with it. I think Leo was one and by end with so much going on I forgot about him.
The first maybe two thirds of this story were interesting, good reading for me. And then it got - excuse me - kind of stupid. The DNA thing, for one. What police officer is going to lie about the dna of the found girl? And not run it through the missing children data base there and then 🧐. And so it took a couple of high school kids to figure out, without dna, that she wasn’t Delilah? And THEN we’re supposed to believe that people held in isolation captivity can just re-enter their families, la di da. The last third of the book was ridiculous. Too bad, because it was a pretty good story up until…( although as soon as the soundproofing was mentioned, that was a heck of a tip off). 3⭐️ for me.
