St. Mary's church in Maldon
This church stands close to the Blackwater estuary. It dates back to the year 1130 and is said to stand on the site of Saxon church. Most of what is seen today dates from the 13th century. The top half of the 14th century tower collapsed in 1605 and rebuilt in brick in 1638. Some changes took place during the Victorian restoration and the new building, on the right of the picture, is a new meeting place known as the Octagon.
