High Rocks
High Rocks were formed when a melting ice sheet at the end of the last Ice Age uncovered hardened silt deposited when the area was part of the Wealden Lake. There are traces of Middle Stone Age and Iron Age residents, including a fort from the 1st century AD guarding against the Roman invasion. The rocks consist of Ardingly Sandstone where joints have opened out to form spectacular cracks which are wide enough in places for a person to enter.
After King James II visited Tunbridge Wells, High Rocks became a tourist attraction which also offered a maze, a bowling green, gambling rooms and cold baths. The Aerial Walk, which is a series of bridges linking the tops of the crags and is one of the main attractions, was built in the 19th century.
The rocks on the left is known as the Giant Toad, not to be confused with Toad Rock at nearby Rusthall Common, also formed out of Ardingly Sandstone -see Link
