SK3584 : The White Lion, Heeley
taken 1 year ago, 3 km from Sheffield, England
A heritage pub in a southern suburb of Sheffield. There was an ale house on the site since at least 1781, of which the former concert room remains as a back bar. It was extended 1877-1884. The present frontage and much of the internal decoration and fittings date from a 1920s remodelling by the brewers Duncan Gilmour, and refurbished (sensitively) by Tetley in the 1980s. The reason for the grade II listing (list entry 1330571) is that it 'illustrates the development from a C18 beerhouse to a pub-cum-hotel in the early C20 [and] retains much of its late C19/early C20 planning and fittings'.
In 2014 the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) produced a book titled "Yorkshire's Real Heritage Pubs" (ISBN 978-1-85249-315-8). These are pubs that might be listed for their exterior architecture, or serve great real ale, but not all: inclusion in the collection is for their unaltered historic interiors representing mostly the Victorian and Edwardian era with features such as brass, carved wood, real fires, mosaics and tiling. This shared description will cover the 17 listed in South Yorkshire (mostly Sheffield and Doncaster) as I visit them.
