The 14 Best Coffee Mugs to Add to Your Cupboard in 2022

Ceramic mugs are standard everyday drinking vessels because they tend to stay hotter for longer (without picking up any weird smells or tastes)—and can usually be found for less than their stoneware counterparts. Heath Ceramics, out of California, has been making trusted pottery since the late 1940s, but its Large Mug hits different for a few reasons. It’s tall—not wide—for optimal heat retention, and its handle is large enough to get all four fingers in when you’re tilting an entire French press' worth of liquid into your mouth.

- Capacity: 12 oz

The search for a great ceramic coffee mug could end at legacy dinnerware brands, but there are plenty of modern designers to look into as well. Start with Athena Calderone, who recently collaborated with Crate & Barrel on a home collection that's flying off the virtual shelves. Though she isn't a potter by trade, this ceramic fluted mug looks like it was hand-thrown—and far more expensive than the price tag would indicate.

- Dimensions: 3.5" x 4.5"
- Capacity: 10 oz

Dishwasher-safe and effortlessly elegant, glass coffee mugs are sculptural pieces of art waiting to house your dalgona coffee, tea, or hot toddy. When buying glassware for hot beverages, a double-walled mug is your best bet for primo insulation—and safety. Bodum is among the best in the business, thanks to its mouth-blown borosilicate glass that's heat-resistant to safeguard hands. There’s also a waterproof silicone vent on the mug that levels the air pressure between the two chambers (so you aren't holding a handle without the rest of the cup after pouring a hot drink).

- Dimensions: 3.5" x 4.25"
- Capacity: 10 oz

If double wall mugs aren’t your vibe, a simple amber or Mosser glass option will get the job done while adding some retro aesthetic to your life. Take this stout cup and saucer set, for instance, that feels like it was sourced from a ‘70s coffee shop. It's made by Kinto, a Japanese homeware brand known for high-quality ceramics that are made from sandstones local to Nagasaki. This sepia-toned mug has a squared-off handle to ensure your hot coffee, cappuccino, or maybe even your cold brew makes it to your lips—but there’s a teak and plywood saucer underneath in case of spillage.

These scalloped works of art are are hand-formed by the Kaneko Kohyo Pottery Co. in Japan, and are available in three matte-finished glazes. The company specializes in trend-averse products, as displayed by this camp-inspired enamel mug in a color combo you won't find anywhere else. A major pro to investing in enamelware for your everyday cuppa joe? Per Toast, "if you drop enamelware, it may chip but it won’t break…the steel beneath it naturally oxidizes and the enamelware remains safe to use."

- Material: Enamel, porcelain
- Capacity: 12 oz

No self-respecting coffee drinking would sip their espresso out of a giant vessel. While typical coffee mugs carry 10 to 12 ounces, an espresso cup hovers between two and three. But good news for anyone who just dropped a pretty penny on an espresso machine: cheap options aren't hard to come by. H&M, which has a great selection of home goods, has these café style sets that are top-rated (an average 4.8 our of 5 stars).

As expected, this travel coffee mug is design-forward with 13 different colors to choose from—but it doesn't compromise on functionality. With a snap-in splash guard, grippy ceramic outer coating, and narrow width that’ll ensure it fits into any car cup holder (or small set of hands), it’ll be used on the daily. Word to the wise: You’ll want to hand wash this beauty to ensure long-term use.
