What type of false eyelashes are best?

There are three main types of lashes to choose between: strip lashes (which as the name suggests are a whole strip of lashes that fit the length of your eye), cluster lashes (which are smaller chunks of lashes that you can place along your eye, you'll usually need around 4-5) and individual lashes (which are much smaller clusters of around 1-5 lashes).

“I personally love individual lashes over strip lashes,” says pro celebrity makeup artist, Shelby Smith, whose clients include Dua Lipa, Maddie Ziegler, Addison Rae and The Kardashians. “I find they look the most natural and are the most comfortable wear. I recommend individual flare clusters to build the desired look or simply fill in any sparse areas. When I reach for a pair of strip lashes I recommend choosing styles that have a thin clear band and have a variation of lengths throughout giving that seamless blend with the natural lashes,” she says.

Diane Buzzetta, pro celebrity makeup artist to Hailey Bieber, Camila Morrone, Kendall Jenner and Sofia Richie, agrees. “I love using Ardell lashes,” she says. “I tend to gravitate towards their single and individual lashes but also love their strip options as the bands are easy to blend with plenty of designs to choose from.”

What's the best way to apply false lashes?

There's definitely an art to applying falsies correctly, so we asked Diane and Shelby to share their tips. “I always suggest letting the glue dry enough to be tacky and not too wet before applying,” says Diane. “Pour your glue earlier than you are going to start application and allow it sit out in open air,” agrees Shelby. “This lets the glue become more tacky in consistency so your lashes don’t slide out of place and instead adhere immediately,” she adds.

“Also, if using a strip lash, always measure the strip before applying it with glue. I like to lay a strip lash on the eye without glue to make sure I like how it fits,” says Diane. Cut it to size if you need to, then add the glue.

Can you wear mascara with false lashes?

The answer is yes. Both Shelby and Diane favour a sandwich method when it comes to using mascara with false lashes. “I personally like to curl the lashes first, then apply a light coat of mascara and then apply the false lashes. Once I feel the lashes are secure and the glue is dry. I like to apply a final coat of mascara,” says Diane. Shelby concurs, “this blend them together and provides a more seamless appearance,” she advises.

Don't forget, if you're loading up your lash line with false eyelashes, you'll need a gentle but effective eye makeup remover that's suitable for sensitive eyes to help wash away lash glue without damaging your own lashes.
