The fastest growing plant in the world, bamboo is an excellent and useful landscaping plant. It produces edible shoots and an endless supply of canes that can be used for a multitude of purposes around the garden. To ensure the safe consumption of bamboo shoots, it's important to boil them before use. This process helps to remove the cyanogenic glycosides produced by the plant as a defence against herbivores. It's advisable to boil for at least 20mins and change the water once or twice during boiling to ensure all toxins are eliminated. Bamboos considered edible have a sweet pleasant taste when this is done. Other bamboos considered inedible can be rendered safe to eat after boiling but may be bitter in taste.

It has deep green foliage that starts low on the smooth clumps which turn yellow as they are exposed to sunlight. Bamboo - Gracilis

Slender erect green culms that when exposed at base will reveal long green internodes that turn yellow when in contact with the sun. Gracilis is a very popular variety and for good reason. Its growth rate is rapid and can handle almost any growing conditions and soil types and still look spectacular. Also known as Slender Weaver Bamboo it has dense evergreen foliage that can be left low to the ground or pruned away to show of its many culms. Gracilis is a non-invasive tight clumper that can easily grow in a narrow boxed garden bed. The fresh new shoots are edible. Culms can be split in long lengths, are strong and thin walled making them ideal for use in handcrafts such as basket weaving, furniture making, and musical instruments to name a few. Bamboo - Boni

Smaller, clumping type bamboo that can be pruned to 2m. Will hold lower foliage on new growth to create a screen for small spaces, giving a lush tropical feel to a garden. Great for growing in pots, too. Can grow to 3-4m high when left to grow and 1m wide, can be triangular in shape. Fine look with green culms to 2cm. Canes can be harvested for use in the garden. Plant 1m apart for hedging applications. Cold tolerant to -7C. The bamboo shoots on this variety are not considered edible as they are bitter even when prepared the proper way.
Bamboo - Sweet

Young shoots are consumed as a vegetable. The culm is very useful as a building material and for making musical instruments and other handicrafts. Large, tufted, woody bamboo with dark green culms of 15-22 m high and 5-10 cm in diameter. Culm internodes are thin-walled and are on average 4050 cm long. The lower part of the culms develop aerial roots from the nodes. It is a dense clumper, native to Malaysia.

Tiger Grass

Tiger Grass is well known for its similar look to bamboo, even though it is a giant clumping grass. It grows to around 3-4mtrs in height and cannot be trimmed shorter. It grows about 1m wide but can be planted closer than this for screening. Tiger Grass is fairly low maintenance and drought tolerant once established, though looks much better with regular water through dry periods.
