British Artist Mark Powel uses old envelopes, documents or sheets of music to draw his portraits.  With just the use of a pen he has drawn these faces with an incredible amount of personality.  Not what most would consider conventional beauty, they are incredibly expressive, I love them.  These images can be bought on Mark Powel's site.

Sweden based Painter Mikael Takacs presents us with these lovely surreal paintings of people he has met in his lifetime.  We don't usually use, hand painted, in our titles but, we wanted to make it clear that these are not Digital Paintings and that they are created using acrylic paint on canvas.  Even though the images are heavily distorted, some more than others, we still manage to pick up the main components that identify them as faces.  Proving once more, how predisposed we are to recognise faces in everything that surrounds us.

Beautiful paintings by German Painter Alpay Efe.  It is the subtlety of the emotions that models are able to emote, there are no scenes with enormous smiles, crying or an outburst of exploding anger.  These are expressions that you have to pay attention to, to understand, it is almost like the models are repressing the emotion or are experiencing a mild aspect of that particular feeling of happiness, anger, disappointment, anticipation, longing, pride...

Melissa Helene describes herself as a Scratchboard & Graphite Artist, Photographer, Wildlife and Nature Enthusiast.  We also use her words to describe how the Scratchboard works: "Scratchboard is a subtractive medium that uses a variety of abrasive tools to scratch away the outer black layer of the board to reveal the white layer beneath.  Scratches are placed in layers to obtain the desired values of gray and white."  Helene really manages to capture the minute details, that allow her to portray perfectly, the expressions of the animals she is depicting.  You know when you are looking at a portrait if the artists has not been able to capture it and these are perfect.  Enjoy...

Painting and Drawing Portraits with Dry Brush

No comments:
00-Igor-Kazarin-Painting-and-Drawing-Portraits-with-Dry-Brush-www-designstack-co
In this post Igor Kazarin shows us and tells us about this amazing technique.  It is achieved by using a very small amount of oil paint, mixed with solvents like sewing machine lubricating oil.  A small amount is put on the brush which is rubbed in on the palette, to the point where the brush looks dry.  Now it can be used to paint on watercolour paper and any mistakes and highlights can be erased with a rubber.  This amazing paint effect makes painted images look like pencil drawings. The sped up videos below, will show you just how good this technique is and how the shades are layered to make the painting look so realistic.
