Experience a lovely small town with a bustling harbour. Stand face to face with the forces of nature and enjoy a rich cultural life.

A holiday to Skagen lets you get up close to the forces of nature. You will get to experience two seas crashing together and huge sand dunes drifting across the landscape. Stroll along the streets and see picturesque houses, or enjoy a meal in the busy harbour.

Skagen flourished as a fishing harbour in the mid-1200s, and fishing has been, and still is, an important industry for the town. Skagen is Denmark’s northernmost town and a much-loved holiday destination. Did you know that Skagen is one of Denmark’s sunniest towns?

To get a fantastic view of the area, you can take a trip up to Skagen Lighthouse (Skagen fyr). How about seeing one of Denmark’s drifting sand dunes, such as the Råbjerg Mile? Or you can visit the Sand-Covered Church (Den tilsandend kirke) which lost its battle against the sand dunes in 1795. Another interesting place miss is Grenen, Denmark’s northernmost point, which separates the Kattegat and Skagerak straits. A trip to Skagens Museum is also worth a visit, as it displays the works of many Skagen painters, amongst many others.

How about renting a bike and cycling around Skagen and the surrounding area? Denmark is very well adapted for cyclists, and renting a bike is easy. There are plenty of places to stay the night in Skagen. You can find a bed in an exclusive hotel or in a simple B+B – there is something for everyone.

If you want to travel to Skagen from Eastern Norway, a good alternative is taking one of the so-called “danskebåtene” or Danish ships. The ferries call in to Hirtshals and Frederikshavn, which are both located about 25-30 miles from Skagen. You can also fly to Denmark. The nearest airport is in Aalborg, around 60 miles from Skagen.

Skagen is a lovely town known for its yellow brick houses with red tiled roofs and white trimmings. If you come to Skagen on holiday, you can experience everything from lazy days at the harbour to the dramatic forces of nature.
