Airco DH9 [2005 / ZS-AOI]

Some 48 DH9s saw SAAF service, many of which were later fitted with Bristol Jupiter radial engines and renamed as the M'pala. Some continued in service until 1937.

One of only four known survivors of the type worldwide, this example is fitted with an original Siddeley Puma inline engine.

After SAAF service it was civil registered as 'ZS-AOI' in June 1938 but is not thought to have flown as such before returning to the SAAF in March 1940 as '2005' and becoming an instructional airframe. Renumbered as 'I.S8' it was later donated to the South African National Museum of Military History, where it remains on display. It is currently silver doped overall and unmarked, having previously been displayed as 'I.S8'.
